Ms. Teng Weiqiang Has Been Imprisoned for Eight Years for Hanging Up a Banner

Mr. Teng Weiqiang, 33, is from Baishan City, Jilin Province. He graduated from Yanbian University in 2001. In February 2002, he was arrested for displaying a Falun Gong banner and then sentenced to ten years in prison. He is currently imprisoned in Gongzhuling Prison. As a result of many years of torture, he looks like skin and bones. Guards repeatedly denied requests from his family to visit him and it has been four years since his mother has seen him.

Around midnight on February 4th, 2002, Mr. Teng was arrested while he was hanging up a Falun Gong banner. During his detention at the Baishan City Police Department, officers hung him up and covered his head with several plastic bags to choke him. Mr. Teng was held in a basement without heat and had only a thin layer of clothing despite the freezing winter weather. He was brutally beaten by several officers and then, four days later, taken to the Baishan City Detention Centre.

When Mr. Teng went on a hunger strike at the Baishan Detention Centre, guards and inmates forced-fed him. Over five months, Mr. Teng developed symptoms of pleurisy and tuberculosis. He was coughing up blood but was not provided medical treatment. The judicial system did not notify his family, as required by law, that Mr. Teng was sentenced to ten years in prison.

Mr. Teng was held in Jilin Second Prison for more than two years. During that time, guards and inmates under their command beat him, cursed him, and deprived him of sleep. Subsequently, he was imprisoned in Tiebei Prison in Changchun for more than a year. He was then transferred to Gongzhuling Prison, where he remains today.
