Two Sisters from Tangshan City Secretly Sentenced

Ms. Wang Xiuwen and Ms. Wang Xiuqin, who had been arrested half a year ago by officers from the Fengnan District Police Department, Tangshan City, were secretly sentenced to three and a half years of imprisonment. Officers from the Xiaoji Township Police Station ransacked their home on January 21st and abducted their sister, Ms. Wang Xiuli. They threatened Wang Xiuli to prevent her from hiring a lawyer or requesting the release of her sisters.

Ms. Wang Xiuwen and Ms. Wang Xiuqin are from Fengnan Township.

Both ladies were arrested in the morning of August 24th, 2009 by officers from the Xige Police Station, who was following the orders of Li Zhenguo, the head of the station. They were arrested while they were distributing information about the persecution of Falun Gong in a market. The officers also tried to get the two sisters to give them money.

The sisters were detained for 15 days before being transferred to Fengnan Detention Centre.

The Fengnan District Court put Ms. Wang Xiuwen and Ms. Wang Xiuqin on trial on December 17th, 2009. Since Ms. Wang Xiuqin lost consciousness during the trial, the court was adjourned.

The district court reopened on January 18th, 2010. Thereafter, officials from the Fengnan District Court, Fengnan 610 Office (an organisation of special agents just for persecuting Falun Gong), as well as the police and judicial department conspired in the sentencing of the two sisters. The head of the Fengnan District Court, Wei Suzhen, said, "We have only one procedure here, which is, the verdict will be decided by the police department." One court official asked, "It doesn't matter if the lawyer makes a convincing argument or not. Who has the final say?" This meant the judge would not give a ruling in accordance with the law.

Not long after that, the court sentenced the sisters behind closed doors. Currently, they are being held at the Fengnan Detention Centre.
