Ms. Zhu Yu'an, 49 years old, is from Hongjiang, Huaihua City, Hunan Province. Her health improved due to practising Falun Gong. She has been talking to people about the persecution of Falun Gong since it started in 1999. Because of this, she has been persecuted by the local 610 Office (an organisation of special agents just for persecuting Falun Gong) and the police. She was sent twice to a forced labour camp, and her son was expelled from the university due to her belief in Falun Gong.
In mid October 1999, Ms. Zhu was detained by the police for two weeks for telling people the facts about Falun Gong. In mid November the same year, she was detained for another month when she went to appeal in Beijing. Her husband had to hand over 17,000 yuan to the local 610 Office1 and the police to prevent them from sending her to a forced labour camp.
In September 2000, Ms. Zhu was sent to a forced labour camp for one year because she had distributed materials about the persecution.
In September 2002, she was sent to a forced labour camp again for the same reason, this time for one and a half years. Her employer stopped issuing her salary and medical insurance and owed her over 6,000 yuan.
In May 2009, Zhu Yu'an was sent to a forced labour camp for the third time for explaining the facts of Falun Gong. She was originally sentenced to one year and three months, but the forced labour camp refused to accept her because of her poor health, and she was allowed to go home.
Because of his mother's steadfast belief, Ms. Zhu's son was expelled from the university at which he had been studying for two years. Without a degree or certificate, it has been hard for him to find a job.
Her imprisonment made Zhu Yu'an's husband furious at the government, "My wife became healthier and kinder after she practised Falun Gong, so why was she persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party? The Party just wants to throw those who practise Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance into prison. Why should I be a good person? One could be a bad person and get away with it in this society." He started selling drugs and was later arrested and sentenced to 15 years.
Due to the detention and imprisonment, Ms. Zhu health deteriorated and she was near death in a hospital in 2007. Her family has been severely affected as well. Besides the problems of her husband and son, her family is getting poorer. Not rich to start with, she has a debt of 37,000 yuan that she borrowed to pay for the hospitalisation.
