Du Yuhong began practising Falun Gong in October 2008. Prior to that, she was accused on false charges by Chinese Communist Party (CCP) personnel and put in prison, because she opposed illegal relocation. She was released after eight months of imprisonment when a kind person provided testimony on her behalf.

Du Yuhong came into contact with practitioners in prison, who helped her to understand the truth about Falun Gong, and subsequently she joined the practice.

On January 3rd, 2010, Ms. Du was arrested by defence patrol personnel and police officers from the Tongxingshun Police Station for distributing leaflets exposing the persecution of Falun Gong. Her home was ransacked, her Falun Gong books and materials, MP3, MP4, and personal belongings were confiscated, and she was taken to the Shenyang No. 1 Detention Centre.

She was taken to the Masanjia Women's Forced Labour Camp in January 2010. She was locked in a storage room for three days in the beginning of April, when she refused to recite the prison rules and sign the inspection book. Zhang Lei and two other chief guards handcuffed Ms. Du to two beds, then forcibly pulled them apart. Her hand was injured from the torture, and she lost control of her bowels. Her hands were badly swollen, and Zhang Lei threatened her not to tell anyone about the incident.

According to an insider, when Du Yuhong's family visited her at the Masanjia Women's Forced Labour Camp, they were told by a brigade chief: "If Du Yuhong does not 'transform' [forcibly renounce Falun Gong], it is hard to say if she will walk out of here alive." Her family was quite worried about her safety.

The No. 3 brigade of Masanjia Women's Forced Labour Camp in Shenyang, Liaoning is divided into east and west sections. The majority of Falun Gong practitioners are held in the "half open area" on the west side, and the east side is called "East Port". The "East port" is a place that is used to transform, isolate, and torture practitioners; the "storage room" is on level 3 of the No. 3 brigade, and is used specifically for torturing practitioners. The room faces the stairs, and after you walk in, you see piles of new school uniforms along with tubes and other sundry goods. However, you will find a big iron box and metal stairs when you look up. This is where guards torture practitioners.
