Ms. Rong Fengxian Died in Baoding Mental Hospital in 2001

Ms. Rong Fengxian, 32, also known as Rong Hongxian, was a practitioner from Yindingzhuang Village, Jinzhuang Township, Baoding City, Hebei Province. She was persecuted in the Beishi District Brainwashing Centre and died in the Baoding Mental Hospital in 2001.

During the first two weeks of May, 2001, officials from the 610 Office (an organisation of special agents just for persecuting Falun Gong) in Baoding City arrested many practitioners and detained them in the Beishi District Brainwashing Centre, situated in the Seven-One Elementary School.

Gao Jianfeng, head of the Beishi District 610 Office, told practitioners that the brainwashing sessions would continue for a long time, and that those who wanted to be released must write a guarantee statement to defame Falun Gong and pay a 1000 yuan¹ fine. If practitioners refused to comply, they would be subjected to forced labour.

Guards at the brainwashing centre assigned two or three collaborators² to brainwash a single practitioner. Niu Lei was one of those collaborators. Practitioners were monitored twenty four hours a day, and were constantly bombarded with slanderous material against Falun Gong. Practitioners were not allowed to do the exercises or study the Falun Gong teachings, and were prohibited from seeing or talking to other practitioners. Guards even paid people to beat practitioners while they were confined to their cells.

Ms. Rong used to work at the Baoding Kangda Industrial Corporation. She once found 100 yuan on the floor and handed it over to her managers. She told them that she is a practitioner and that Falun Gong teaches people to be good. She was fired from her job the next day. A few days later, she was arrested and taken to the Beishi District Brainwashing Centre.

She went on a hunger strike for six days to protest her innocence, and refused to write a guarantee statement to give up her belief in Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance and insisted on doing the exercises. The head of Jinzhuang Township Political Consultative Committee kicked her very hard and other village officials beat her. They even ordered her husband to beat her, and threatened Ms. Rong's eighty-year-old mother to kneel down in front of her and plead with her to write a guarantee statement. Ms. Rong still refused to co-operate with them, and even managed to escape by jumping from the toilet window. She was soon arrested again, and that night, guards at the brainwashing centre intimidated her family into criticising her. The head of the Political Consultative Committee even followed Ms. Rong wherever she went and didn't let her sleep.

A week later, Ms. Rong's family were told to take her back home, as she was extremely weak. But when she returned home, she was arrested again that afternoon, and was taken to a mental hospital. Ms. Rong died the following day.

Doctors at the hospital claimed that she had died from falling off the bed, and they hastily paid her family 7,000 yuan as compensation. Ms. Rong's family were afraid to question the circumstances surrounding her death and did not want to bring themselves trouble. The family later found out that Ms. Rong had been injected with unknown drugs while she was at the mental hospital.

During the brainwashing sessions at Beishi District Brainwashing Centre, twenty four practitioners were arrested. Three practitioners were sent to hospital for emergency care, one practitioner remains unconscious and one practitioner was persecuted to death.

1. "Yuan" is the Chinese currency; 500 yuan is equal to the average monthly income of an urban worker in China.

2. "Collaborators": former practitioners who have turned against Falun Gong under brainwashing and torture. They are then made to assist in brainwashing and torturing practitioners.
