On the evening of May 16th, Mr. Bai was arrested by local police. The police shot tear gas into his warehouse, where he was hiding. He was overcome and passed out. Thus, the police took him away while he was unconscious. Later the police bound him to a tiger stool for five days. On June 23rd, in the absence of Mr. Bai, the Baiyin City Court sentenced Mr. Bai to jail. Mr. Bai appealed, but his appeal was ignored.
On July 12th, Mr. Bai was sent to Lanzhou City No. 6 Prison Area. He started a hunger strike in late May. He did not eat anything. He was sent to the prison hospital for a physical check-up. However, he was beaten by policeman number 0333814. The policeman kicked him seven or eight times in the lower back. He also slapped Mr. Bai in his face a dozen times. The beating caused Mr. Bai atrophy in his legs and lumbar disc hernia, which caused a lot of pain. He had no trace of colour in his face, and was emaciated. His hair was all cut off.
When he was taken to the prison, he was force-fed once a week. The police put milk powder into 500 ml of corn porridge and forced it through a tube inserted into Mr. Bai's nose. On July 28th, Mr. Bai was very feeble, and passed out. Recently, he has been force-fed everyday and injected with fluid.
On August 2nd, the political director whose last name is Xu from Lanzhou No. 6 Prison Area met Mr. Bai's family for ten minutes. He asked Bai's family to co-operate with the police to convince Bai to eat and sign a guarantee statement to renounce practising Falun Gong. He even asked for three hundred yuan1 for food, although Bai had not eaten at all.
On August 3rd, Bai's family anxiously went to the Gansu Prison Administration. The director whose last name is Niu met them. He made a call to the prison, but police there denied beating him. The director said the prison was not responsible.
This is the second time Mr. Bai has been sentenced. In July 2002, he was sentenced to a three-year imprisonment by the Lanzhou City Chengguan District Court. During this long time of torture, his health worsened. He got scabies all over his body, and oozed pus all over. In September 2002, he went on a hunger strike and was force-fed by the police. His right leg became disabled due to the persecution. In 2004, he was released, however the police station and the Domestic Security Division harassed him all the time. Thus, he was forced to become homeless to avoid further persecution.
