Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Sun Jingwen, 64, from Dalian City was arrested in mid-December 2009 as she visited a friend at her home. Ganjingzi District Court officials sentenced her to a four-year prison term in early August 2010. Ms. Sun appealed, but the Dalian City Intermediate Court upheld the original sentence in late September.
Ms. Sun has been held in the Yaojia Detention Centre since her arrest.
After a secret trial, Ms. Sun appeared to have a persistent high fever for a period of time. The detention centre officials submitted a report regarding Ms. Sun's physical condition to the Ganjingzi District Court, in hopes of seeking medical parole for her. They also expected that the court officials may take her condition into consideration when sentencing her. But despite her poor physical condition and her family's situation, the court officials sentenced Ms. Sun to four years in prison, under the orders of the political and judiciary committee.
Ms. Sun's parents are both 90 years old. Ms. Sun's arrest and detention were a huge emotional blow to her elderly parents. They fell ill and are now bed-ridden.
Ms. Sun's youngest daughter also needs her mother's constant care, as she has suffered from a mental disorder in the past.
