Falun Gong practitioners Ms. Lu Na and Ms. Wang Huanhua are both musical instrument technicians. Prior to their arrest this May, Ms. Lu, 24, worked in a music company in Hefei City, Anhui Province. Ms. Wang, 32, was employed at a company in Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province. While visiting Ms. Wang in April this year, Ms. Lu went out with her on the 29th of the month to distribute Falun Gong DVDs to passersby in Nanjing City. Unfortunately they were reported to the local police. The local police informed their Hefei City counterparts, and the women were arrested that same day. Even though the police released them in June, they have never stopped harassing them at home.
1. Arrests Using Deceptive Means
Posing as a potential customer, a policeman deceived Lu Na into meeting him at her music company in Hefei City around noon on May 13th. Three agents from the Datonglu Police Station, including police Chief Huang and a policeman surnamed Hu, were waiting there. They confiscated all her personal belongings and took Ms. Lu to the police station.
A similar scene unfolded in Nanjing City that same day. Six agents from the Huaihailu Police Station in the Baixia District, including Yang Bangqiang and two men surnamed Huang and Gao, descended on Wang Huanhua's workplace and looted all her personal belongings. They forced her into their vehicle and drove almost three hours to the Datonglu Police Station in Hefei City where Ms. Lu was held. Ms. Wang's child was still in school when she was arrested. The police however paid no attention to the child's welfare. It was learned later that the child missed school and didn't come home for several days in a row after Ms. Wang's arrest. Ms. Wang's family still lives in Hefei City, so it must be that they picked up her child after learning of her arrest.
Later that day the police drove another three hours and took Ms. Lu and Ms. Wang back to the Huaihailu Police Station in Nanjing City. The two women were handcuffed to a bench with their arms behind their backs for a whole night.
The next morning around eight o'clock, the police started their interrogation of Ms. Lu and Ms. Wang. Huaihailu Police Station chief Xu Ting and policeman Yang Bangqiang slapped their faces. They also drew blood samples, took their fingerprints and photographed them.
2. Mistreatment at a Detention Centre
The police next transferred Lu Na and Wang Huanhua to the Xuanwu Detention Centre in Nanjing City, where they were deprived of family visitation and forbidden to do Falun Gong exercises. The guards also made them wear the prison uniform and had cell heads and drug addict inmates monitor them around the clock. Both women were supplied with insufficient toilet paper, even during their periods.
Several days later the police moved the two practitioners to the Nanjing City Detention Centre where video and audio surveillance was set up in numerous places, including the toilet.
The guards granted toilet breaks only at set times. The women needed permission from their cell leaders before they could use the toilet. They were only allowed a short time in the toilet. They were kept in different cells where the space for each person to sleep at was only 20 centimetres wide, so they had to sleep on their sides. The guards also forced them to recite the detention centre rules, do the required physical exercises and read the history of the Chinese Communist Party. At night, the guards made them stand still for two hours without giving them water or allowing them any toilet breaks. The cell heads needed to report every move and word of Ms. Lu and Ms. Wang to the guards.
Ms. Wang was locked up in the "strict management team" from the very beginning. After she went on a protest hunger strike, the guards ordered detention centre doctors and criminal detainees to force-feed her in a place without a surveillance camera. Under directives from detention centre head Wang Wenqing, a cell leader named Ma Lina, drug addict Xia Juan and guard Liu Shan held Ms. Na's head, legs and hands during the force-feeding so she couldn't move. Doctors Liu Hanqiang and Bai shoved a tube in and out of her nostril until her nose bled, nearly suffocating her. Two people had to carry her back to her cell afterwards. This ordeal left her unable to talk over the next few days.
3. Frequent Harassment of Wang Huanhua after Her Release
As the police moved Ms. Lu and Ms. Wang around, they never informed the women's families of their whereabouts. Both families spent more than a hundred thousand yuan1 trying to locate their loved ones. The police released the two women to Hefei City on June 12th. Since Ms. Wang had developed health problems while in custody, her family had to check her into a hospital and paid several thousand yuan in medical bills.
The authorities in Hefei continued their harassment of Ms. Wang after her return. The persecutors included Wang Kekang and Ye Limi from the Domestic Security Division at the Xinzhan Police Department and Xu Yushan from the Changhuai Police Station. Ms. Wang's family receives numerous phone calls from Xu Yushan, intimidating them to keep her under surveillance and to forbid her to return to Nanjing to work. Moreover, Xu Yushan also demanded that her family spy on and report on other practitioners.
