On February 24th, 2009, officers from the Zunhua City Domestic Security Bureau arrested and tortured Mr. Li Haidong because he practises Falun Gong. The Zunhua City Court sentenced Mr. Li to five years in Jidong Prison in Tangshan City. On September 7th, Mr. Li went on a protest hunger strike in the prison and was force-fed. By the time of this report, he had not eaten for over 40 days.
On October 14th, Mr. Li's brothers and relatives and the head of Xiaonian Village went to Jidong Prison to visit him. Mr. Li was pale and emaciated. Three inmates had to carry him to the visiting room because he was too weak to walk on his own. His voice was also weak.
The village head and Mr. Li's brothers were worried that Mr. Li's life was in danger. The village head vouched for Mr. Li and asked the prison authorities to release him for medical treatment. The prison directors (one with the last name Yin) said that they would not release Mr. Li, saying "If he dies, we will just tell his family to take away the body and then we're done with it."
Mr. Li's mother heard that her son had not been eating and drinking for over 40 days and was worried sick. Her old illnesses recurred and she had to stay at home to get treatment. She suffered a brain haemorrhage in the past and the right side of her body is paralysed. She is not able to take care of herself. Mr. Li's father has had a stroke and the left side of his body is paralysed. He has to take care of his wife all by himself, in addition to doing household chores and making a living.
