Female Practitioner Suffers Mental Collapse Due to Torture at Zhejiang Women's Prison

Ms. Su Shufen lives in Diaozhoucao, Kanmen, Yuhuan County. She was very weak and ill before she started practising Falun Gong, but after she began the practice in January 1999, her health was restored. Ms. Su has been arrested twice since the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) started the persecution of Falun Gong.

In May 2002, Ms. Su was reported to police while making Falun Gong informational materials. Over ten officers from the Yuhuan 610 Office (an organisation of special agents just for persecuting Falun Gong) and the local guard station rushed into her home and took her away. She was detained in a forced labour camp for three years.

Ms. Su's older sister was taken away in March 2007. On March 21st, 2007, Ms. Su and her entire family went to the Yuhuan Detention Centre to ask for her sister's release. Officers from the Yuhuan 610 Office immediately took Ms. Su to the Yuhuan Detention Centre, where she was detained for more than seven months. The Yuhuan public security departments later worked together covertly to secretly sentence her to a three-year prison term. During that period, the court held two sessions but didn't inform her family or attorney.

Ms. Su became mentally unstable as a result of being tortured in the detention centre. She was secretly taken to Zhejiang Women's Prison, where her family was not allowed to visit her for a long time. Her family was not informed until a year after she was transferred. When her family saw her, she had become dangerously emaciated.

During her two years of imprisonment, prison staff injected drugs into her body, which caused her to suffer a mental collapse. She was then no longer able to care for herself. Ms. Su was not released until October 2009. By that time, Ms. Su had become restless and agitated, and exhibited paranoid thinking. She often said to herself, "The Zhejiang Women's Prison and the 610 Office let ghosts harm me." She could not take food, as she vomited as soon as she ate. She seldom experienced restful sleep and did not tell her family when she went out. Her family once searched for her for several days and worried about her. Her situation is better now but she has yet to fully recover.
