Zhou Huaiju, almost 50 years old, is from Beitianping Village, Guan County. After she divorced her husband, she took care of her 10-year-old daughter alone. She lived a hard life, having to ride a tricycle every day to sell vegetables on the street. After she started to practise Falun Gong, she strove to be a good person following the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance.

Ever since the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) started to persecute Falun Gong in 1999, Ms. Zhou has been brutally persecuted many times.

Ms. Zhou Huajiu and Ms. Zhou Chunfa were neighbours as well as fellow practitioners. One afternoon in the spring of 2001, she went to Zhou Chunfa's house to lend her a bicycle. At that time the police happened to be arresting Ms. Zhou Chunfa. The police then arrested Zhou Huaiju and a person who was collecting the electricity bill from Zhou Chunfa. The police also went to Zhou Huaiju's home and ransacked it. At the police station, police officer Sun Lugui used an electric baton to strike Zhou Huaiju's face and a rubber baton to hit her back. Zhou Huaiju was black and blue all over. Later she was taken to Guan County Prison.

On the morning of May 18th, 2002, Ms. Zhou Huaiju was walking down the street when a police vehicle stopped in front of her and the police arrested her. They took her to the Guan County Law School. This is a brainwashing centre specifically used to detain and persecute Falun Gong practitioners. Practitioners have been forced into this brainwashing centre on a regular basis. Chen Yuezhi, captain of the National Security Team in Guan County Public Security Department, and a few other police officers tortured and interrogated her.

Ms. Zhou Huaiju could not eat or drink for nine days as a result of the torture. Her abdomen was swollen very badly and her condition was critical. The police had to release her.

On April 27th, 2004, she went out to sell vegetables. Chen Yuezhi and a few police officers arrested her again. They used an electric baton on her and then imprisoned her in a detention centre. The police at the detention centre followed Chen Yuezhi's orders to brutally torture Ms. Zhou Huaiju. She was tortured so badly that she could not eat, and she couldn't stop vomiting. On the seventh day, she was in such bad shape that the police had to release her. While she was detained, the police confiscated all the steamed buns, toilet paper, and underwear that Ms. Zhou Huaiju's daughter had sent her. The police also confiscated the only vehicle that Ms. Zhou Huaiju had to sell vegetables.
