Six years ago, on April 16th, 2005, two women–Xu Lihua and Shi Guihua– were arrested by Yangshu Police Station in Acheng District, Harbin City, Heilongjiang Province. These two women were persecuted for practising Falun Gong. One became blind and the other suffered a mental breakdown. Below is an account of what they went through.
Ms. Xu Lihua becomes blind in both eyes
On April 16th, 2005, Fu Wenjun, head of Yangshu Township Police Station, and another officer from Acheng City Police Station drove two cars to Xu Lihua's home, broke in, and brought her to the detention centre.
Ms. Xu has worked in the education field for several decades. She has always been a good worker and is known to be kind and upright.
A week after she was detained, she felt her vision blurring. A few days later, the guards gave her medication, claiming that it would cure her eyes. After taking medication for a week, her eyesight deteriorated. Officers put her on an IV drip. As a result, she was in extreme pain. She asked what medication they had given her, but they would not tell her. Half a month later, she completely lost her eyesight. Officers contacted her family members to send her to the hospital for treatment, but upon examination, the hospital told them it was too late to treat her.
Shi Guihua driven to mental collapse
On April 16th, 2005, Shi Guihua and Xu Lihua were arrested at the same time. While detained, Ms. Shi gave into the guards' threats against her conscience after being deceived into believing that she would be released afterwards. Instead, she was sent to the Wanjia Forced Labour Camp.
Ms. Shi worried about her three young children and her husband, who was not in good health, and cried daily. She was repeatedly interrogated and forced to say things against her conscience. She was even forced to perform hard labour. The series of torture methods she was subjected to brought her to the brink of mental collapse. Not long after she was detained, her husband passed away. The news was a heavy blow to her, and was the catalyst for her mental collapse. She wanted to cry but no tears came. She couldn't eat or sleep.
Soon after Ms. Shi heard about her husband's death, the persecution that she went through became even worse and more sinister. One day, the head of the prison ward told her that she would be given an injection to help her sleep, and they injected her with an unknown substance. Afterward her whole body was in terrible pain and she often had hallucinations. She constantly felt that someone was talking to her, telling her to do this and that. She also started to speak incoherently. She would shiver with fear whenever she saw the colours of red or black. She turned into a completely different person. Consequently, the forced labor camp released her before her term was due.
Ms. Shi used to be a fit, clear-minded, and good person. From the reactions she had after being given the injection, it is clear that she was not given a sleeping aid. According to insider sources, the labour camp often secretly placed drugs in the food given to Falun Gong practitioners, using them in medical experiments. Some were alert and refused to eat the food after discovering a funny taste. Others were unaware and became victims.
These two women were terribly persecuted because they did not see the true nature of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). They thought that as long as they obeyed it, they would be spared. They gave up Falun Gong and accepted the drugs they were given. They were lied to and were not released from detention. Not only that, but one became blind, and the other suffered a mental collapse from the persecution.
