Falun Gong practitioner Mr. Tang Haian of Wuhan, Hubei Province was sentenced on January 10th. The Wuchang District Court notified his family just one hour before his trial. There was no defence lawyer or audience present at the court. The court was adjourned after several questions were asked of Mr. Tang. On January 13th, the court notified the family that Mr. Tang had been sentenced to five years in prison, and they could visit him before 9:00 a.m. on January 24th. The court told them that before they could visit Mr. Tang, they must get a visitor's permit document from the court at 8:00 a.m. of the same morning. Mr. Tang's wife was shocked by the news.
Mr. Tang was an employee of the Wunan Station. He passed out a flyer to his apprentice about the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners in July 2000. He was reported by the father of his apprentice and detained for half a year. Subsequently, he was ordered to work as a janitor as punishment, and was under surveillance daily. In the middle of May 2004, the management of the station tried to coerce Mr. Tang to declare giving up his belief in writing, and threatened to fine him 6,000 yuan1 and take him to the Miaoshan Brainwashing Center operated by the provincial 610 Office (an organisation of special agents just for persecuting Falun Gong). After being subjected to brainwashing, Mr. Tang left home to avoid further persecution.
On August 16th, 2010, officers from the Meiyuan Police Station and agents from the Changchunguan Neighbourhood Committee of Mr. Tang's community arrested him at home, ransacked the home, and seized Mr. Tang's computer, discs, and Falun Gong materials. He was first held at the police station, and then at the Wuchang District Detention Centre, formerly known as the Qingling Detention Centre.
