Persecution Suffered: Detention, home ransacked, brainwashing, beatings, forced injections, force-feeding, drug poisoning
Dongli District police agents arrested Ms. Wang Jingxiang four times between 2000 and 2010 and ransacked her home. She was detained and tortured in the Banqiao Women’s Labour Camp for a total of six years. During these periods of detention, she was beaten, force-fed, and given nerve-damaging as well as aphrodisiac drugs through her food. As a result, she has acquired various illnesses, including high blood pressure, diabetes, gastric haemorrhage, and cerebral infarction. She has been in critical condition several times.
After Ms. Wang began to practise Falun Gong in 1997, many of her illnesses disappeared, and she had a happy family life. However, after the persecution started in July 1999, she was arrested and detained. Dongli police pressured her husband to divorce her. Her teenage daughter had to stop going to school and was raised by her aunt.
The First Arrest: Given Nerve-damaging Drugs
Ma Yuqi and other agents from the Zhangguizhuang Police Station arrested Ms. Wang in November 2001 and held her at the Dongli Detention Centre for more than 70 days. The deputy detention centre head, surnamed Li, hit her leg with a rubber baton because she did the Falun Gong exercises. The bruises lasted for several years. Officials sent Ms. Wang to the labour camp for two and a half years of detention and forced labour. Then they extended it by one year after the term was completed.
Practitioners were forced to work more than 20 hours a day at the Banqiao Women’s Forced Labour Camp. They were not allowed to sleep until the work assignments were completed. Ms. Wang’s blood pressure was above 200 because of the intensive labour.
In March 2003, guard Kou Na and drug offenders held Ms. Wang on the floor after seeing her do the exercises. They force-fed her with nerve-damaging drugs for two hours. Kou grabbed her by the hair and instructed several inmates, including Tang Yingying, to hit her in the face and on the head. She was dizzy, so they poured a jar of water into her nose and mouth, almost making her suffocate.
Kou then put Ms. Wang in solitary confinement in May 2003 and ordered inmate Wang Hui to add unknown drugs to her meal. They even added aphrodisiac drugs to her meal. This made her dizzy and disoriented for many days. After Ms. Wang discovered that she was given drugs, the guards said it was a drug to lower her blood pressure. In addition, the guards instructed several inmates to grab her by the hair and forcibly pour drugs into her mouth.
The Second Arrest: A Life-threatening Condition
When Ms. Wang and several practitioners from the Dongli District were studying the Falun Gong teachings at home in June 2006, Liu Qiang and other agents from the Zhangguizhuang Police Station came and arrested them. The agents also confiscated Falun Gong books, a computer, and a printer. The practitioners were taken to the Dongli District Riot Squad. Some of them were released that same day. However, several practitioners were sent to a labour camp, including Ms. Wang, Xing Shujian, Wang Zongfeng, and Dong Guiying.
Not long after her arrest and detention, Ms. Wang developed symptoms of a gastric haemorrhage. Ma Jie and other officials at the Zhangguizhuang Police Station still sent her to the Banqiao Women’s Forced Labour Camp. Labour camp officials refused to accept her due to her poor physical condition. Liu Qiang and other police agents persuaded them through acquaintances to admit Ms. Wang.
During a physical examination at the Dagang Hospital, Ms. Wang was diagnosed with high blood pressure, myocardial infarction, insufficient blood supply to the brain, and other illnesses. Nonetheless, labour camp officials continued to torture her and even placed her in solitary confinement. Guards Liu Tixia and Guo Ling instructed inmate Fan Zhiyi to brutally beat Ms. Wang, and several of her teeth fell out. Fan continued to beat her for more than an hour. Because Ms. Wang was very frail and in a life-threatening condition, she was released on medical parole in August 2007.
The Third Arrest
When Ms. Wang and her sister went to visit a relative in July 2008, agents from the Wanxin Police Station telephoned her and deceived her into going to the Zhongshanmen Light Rail Station. They arrested her there. She went on a hunger strike to appeal, but she was sent to the Banqiao Women’s Forced Labour Camp. Guard Guo Ling placed her in solitary confinement and tied her to a bed for several days with her four limbs stretched apart. Guards also began to force-feed her on the sixth day. Not having eaten food for several days, Ms. Wang developed a gastric haemorrhage and was vomiting. All that was force-fed into her was vomited out into a urine container. Prison doctors (Huang Xiaolin, Wang Xiuqun, and Wang Xin) then collected the contents that Ms. Wang vomited and force-fed them into her again. They did it through a tube that was inserted all the way into her stomach. In addition, they did not take out the tube afterwards, causing her great pain.
After being tortured for a long time, Ms. Wang was diagnosed with myocardial infarction and cerebral infarction during a physical examination at the Dagang Hospital. She was released on medical parole in August 2008. However, police agents have harassed her every month since then, making her family suffer tremendously. When Ms. Wang’s daughter went to the police station asking for her clothes back, the police interrogated her as if she were a criminal. They confiscated her mobile phone and handbag, and detained her in the police station for several hours. The agents did not release Ms. Wang’s daughter until 11 p.m.
The Fourth Arrest
Ms. Wang found a job in March 2010 distributing advertising materials in residential buildings. She also took this opportunity to distribute some materials against the persecution of Falun Gong. Someone reported her to the residential committee. Police agents arrested her and took her to the Hexi Detention Centre, where Ms. Wang went on a hunger strike. The detention centre doctor force-fed her through a nasal tube and did not remove the tube afterwards. During this detention, Ms. Wang had symptoms of various illnesses—more symptoms than during previous detentions. Police agents still took her to the Banqiao Women’s Forced Labour Camp. Labour camp officials did not want to accept her due to her poor physical condition. Agents from the Guijiangli Police Station insisted on it and even offered to pay a large amount of money for her admission.
After going on a hunger strike for three months, Ms. Wang was very weak. She had many health problems, including anaemia, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Labour camp officials gave her unknown drugs through IV injection. As a result, she vomited whenever she was given such an injection, and she was in great pain. In addition, labour camp officials put her in solitary confinement the whole time and instructed an inmate to watch her all the time.
Ms. Wang’s symptoms continued for nine months. She was finally released on medical parole. Nonetheless, agents from the labour camp and the Wanxin Police Station have often gone to harass her, sometimes even at 9 p.m.
