The Tenth Court of the Haizhu District in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, tried lawyer Zhu Yubian on the morning of May 4th. Mr. Zhu has been detained for eight months. He engaged two defence attorneys, one of whom was forced to quit, while the other was detained and released recently.
Mr. Zhu obtained his Master of Law degree at Sun Yat-Sen University. He was a lawyer with the Guangda Law Firm and the Hengyi Law Firm in Guangdong. He offered low-income people discounts, even free legal services. Local newspapers published two articles on his passion for social contribution activities.
He was the first defence attorney to openly defend Falun Gong practitioners' innocence. He pleaded innocent in court for three practitioners from 2005 to 2006. After his rigorous plea for practitioner Ms. Gao Huanlian, the judge and prosecutors fell silent. Finally, a prosecutor said, “(You) think it is good, then practise it at home. Do not practise in public.”
On February 11th, 2007, Mr. Zhu was arrested at practitioner Mr. Lin Zhiyong's home in Panyu, Guangzhou, and held in a forced labour camp for 18 months.
On August 18th, 2010, he was arrested at home. Police searched his home.
Mr. Zhu's family hired an attorney at the end of November 2010. The Attorney Administration Office of the Guangzhou Judicial Bureau harassed the attorney. Worried about his personal safety, Mr. Zhu's mother had to discharge the attorney.
The court has refused to allow Mr. Zhu's mother to be his legal representative or to audit the trial, citing that she is a practitioner.
