On May 2nd, 2011, Falun Gong practitioners Ms. Yu Changli and Ms. Yang Shumei, both detained in the Nongan County Detention Centre, were rushed to the emergency department in the Second Hospital of Jilin University, Changchun City. Ms. Yu Changli passed away that same day. She was only 44 years old. Ms. Yang Shumei was in a coma and was closely watched by several policemen.
The Persecution of Ms. Yu Changli and Ms. Yang Shumei
On May 13th, 2010, while Ms. Yu Changli and Ms. Zhang Danfeng were distributing leaflets exposing the persecution and telling people the facts about Falun Gong, they were arrested and taken to the National Security Division and a detention centre. Ms. Yu was taken to the Changchun Third Detention Centre.
On March 5th, 2011, Ms. Yu was transferred from the Changchun Detention Centre to the Nongan Detention Centre. She joined Ms. Yang Shumei and Ms. Zhang Danfeng on a hunger strike to protest the persecution.
Prior to the National People's Congress (NPC) and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) on March 2nd, 2011, officers from the Nongan County Police Department Domestic Security Division and Yangshulin Township Police Station broke into Ms. Yang Shumei’s home and arrested her. Her home was also ransacked. They handcuffed her and took her away without even letting her put on her shoes.
On March 4th and 7th, Ms. Yang Shumei's family went to the public security bureau asking for her release, but public security personnel put them off and also threatened them. When Ms. Yang Shumei's mother-in-law, in her 80's, and several children went to the public security bureau, they couldn't find the office. As they were walking from office to office, she saw a police officer who had been involved in the arrest and asked him, “Where is my daughter-in-law? She practises Falun Gong and is a good person and hasn't done anything wrong. She is needed to help take care of an 80-year-old old man with an oxygen tank in our home! My second son, Wang Qibo, was sentenced and was tortured to death in Jilin Prison. Now you have taken my younger daughter-in-law. If she is tortured and something happens to her, who will be responsible?” The guard said threateningly, “We are only responsible for arresting people. Your daughter-in-law will be put on trial.”
On March 15th, the police took Ms. Yang Shumei to the Central Hospital of Jilin Provincial Prison (Jilin Province labour camp hospital). On March 16th, her son and daughter, niece, and mother-in-law went to the public security bureau to ask for her release. The Nongan County Public Security wouldn't release her, and they detained all four of them.
On March 31st, Ms. Yang was sent back to the Nongan County Detention Centre.
On April 11th, when her family went to the Nongan County Detention Centre asking to visit her, Liu Kai, the director of the detention centre, and guards told them that they'd need to make remarks slandering Falun Gong to be allowed to see her. When they saw her, she looked frail. Her hands were purple and her feet were chained with ten kilos of iron shackles. She hardly had strength to talk. They tied her to a bed and injected her with drugs six times a day. An armed guard closely watched her 24 hours a day. If she moved even slightly, the guard immediately waved a gun to threaten her.
On May 2nd, 2011, Ms. Yu Changli died and Ms. Yang Shumei was in a coma.
Yang Shumei's Family Beaten When They Asked to See Her
At 9:00 a.m. on May 4th, Ms. Yang Shumei's mother- and father-in-law and a nephew went to the county public security bureau. The nephew had to carry Yang Shumei's father-in-law on his back as the old man could no longer walk. They went upstairs to see the state security captain, Tang Ke, but were told he wasn't in. When they asked to see the director, a policeman told them, “The director is not in, either.”
A complaint officer surnamed Yan then spoke with them. The old man said to him, “I heard a Falun Gong practitioner had been persecuted to death. I heard that my daughter-in-law was sent to Changchun City hospital. What is her situation? We would like to see her.” Yan said, “Your daughter-in-law is in the Nongan County Detention Centre. She is able to eat now.” When the old man asked to see her to make sure, Yan said her case had been submitted to the Procuratorate. The old man then went to the Procuratorate. When he asked about his daughter-in-law, a prosecutor told him, “Her case was submitted to the court today.” So the old man then went to the court. The court personnel said, “We have just received the documents.”
The nephew carried his uncle to the Nongan Detention Centre in the afternoon asking to see her. A guard told them, “She is not allowed to have visitors.” They then went upstairs to see the deputy director. The deputy director said, “Director Liu (Liu Kai) isn't in. He went on a tour. You'll have to wait until he returns.” When the old man demanded to see his daughter-in-law, the deputy director said, “She is not here. She is in the labour camp hospital.”
At 8:00 a.m. on May 5th, Ms. Yang Shumei's mother- and father-in-law and nephew went again to the public security asking to see Ms. Yang. The old man said, “You told us that she was in the detention centre, but she isn't there.” When he began to demand to see her, the guards started to threaten and intimidate them. Three guards took the nephew to a room, and four or five guards beat him. Then they interrogated him and took notes. The interrogation transcripts were completely inconsistent with the facts. When the nephew refuted the record, the guards threatened him. They threatened his two elderly relatives and said that, if they came again, they would be arrested.
Ms. Yang's parents-in-law did not see her and were forced to go home.
