Mudanjiang Prison Guards Brutally Torture Falun Gong Practitioner Mr. Yu Zonghai

Falun Gong practitioner Mr. Yu Zonghai was sentenced to a 15-year prison term in 2001, to be served at Mudanjiang Prison Division No. 6 in Heilongjiang Province. Mr. Yu was tortured and is suffering severe physical injuries. He was forced to perform hard labour, which is illegal under Chinese and international law.

At the end of August 2006, Mr. Yu's left eye was injured and the tear duct broke. The prison hospital was not equipped to treat him, and told him to seek treatment in another hospital. Prison guards of Division 6 demanded money from his family for treatment in an outside hospital.

Mr. Yu's wife and younger sister are detained at Harbin City Women's Prison for practising Falun Gong. Ms. Wang Meihong, Mr. Yu's wife, was sentenced to an 11-year prison term. Therefore, his family had no money. The prison guard said, "If his family doesn't bring the money, Mr. Yu might as well go blind, for all I care." Mr. Yu's younger brother was able to borrow some money, which was just enough for an eye test at Mudanjiang Red Flag Hospital, instead of the surgery that, if delayed, could cost Mr. Yu his eye.

Before the 2008 Beijing Olympic, Mudanjiang Prison Division No. 6 did a body search and on all practitioners many times, including Mr. Yu. He was tortured by guards Ge Hua and Wang Hui and inmate Xie Shide. At the end of 2010, Mr. Yu was brutally beaten. His leg was broken and his breastbone extruded from his chest. He still suffers dizziness, cannot see clearly and has problems when walking.

Despite his severe injuries, the guards forced him to do hard labour, and beat him when he refused to comply with their orders. Mudanjiang Prison has denied family visits, so his family found out about the torture only recently.

Background

Yu Zonghai was a painter at the Mudanjiang City Library. He specialised in creative design, was a model worker and the main producer at his workplace. Before learning Falun Gong, he was always tired from working long hours and developed femoral head necrosis [blood supply to the femoral head is compromised and results in destruction of bone marrow]. He sought treatment everywhere, but without any result.

After practising Falun Gong and attending the Falun Gong founder's lecture in Dalian in 1994, he was cured. After the class, he could carry 100 kgs of rice up four flights of stairs. This amazed many people, so many of his family members, colleagues and cadres from his workplace also began to learn Falun Gong. After learning Falun Gong, Mr. Yu Zonghai had a positive outlook.

Mr. Yu continues to practise Falun Gong despite the brutal persecution.
