Ms. He Yanhua had been working as a chemistry teacher at Shanhe Middle School, in Maogang District, Maoming City, Guangdong Province, for more than ten years. Because she practises Falun Gong, she was detained in a forced labour camp and brainwashing centre multiple times, and tortured. She refused to sign a guarantee statement to stop practising Falun Gong, and has been deprived of her salary for over three years. She has had to survive on her own savings in addition to working as a tutor.
Ms. He Yanhua was often sick when she was young. After practising Falun Gong, her health improved. Her performance at school was spoken highly of by her students and supervisors. The former principal once called her and said that she should be formally recognized as an excellent teacher. However, since she practised Falun Gong, the principal dared not award her.
In May 2008, a few months before the Beijing Olympic Games, Ms. He Yanhua was arrested on the playground of her school by personnel from the Yangjiao County Government. Many students and teachers witnessed the arrest. Afterward, she was held in a brainwashing centre, and local 610 Office agents (an organisation of special agents just for persecuting Falun Gong) did not let her return to teach her students, who were going to graduate within a month. Instead, they beat her for performing the Falun Gong exercises and ordered her to sign a document stating that she would discontinue the practice. She refused, and was held there for more than four months.
The Maoming 610 Office instructed her school to stop compensating her three years ago, in June 2008. To date, she has yet to receive any salary for the work she did after her release. Ms. He left her school in late 2008.
Ms. He returned to work when the new term started in 2010. 610 Office agents told her to work as a janitor, however she still was not paid. She visited a number of departments requesting compensation, but they kept redirecting her elsewhere.
Moreover, she has been monitored by the authorities since her release. If she wants to take time off within the following three months, she has to ask for permission, even during the holidays.
She is still being deprived of compensation from the school.
