His family went to the Jiaozhou Detention Centre numerous times demanding to see him, but each time they were turned away. When his wife went to the police department and asked to see the head of the department, the guards told her that the person was not in. When she went to the Jiaozhou Office of Letters and Calls, the staff there sent her to the Procuratorate Office; when she went to the Procuratorate Office, she was sent back to the Office of Letters and Calls. Finally, when she went to Jiaozhou Court, she was still not given an answer. When she asked why Mr. Yang’s family wasn't notified as the law specifies, the staff there told her that a notice would be sent out in two or three days. When she asked where Mr. Yang was being detained, the answer was, “We don’t know.”
Mr. Yang Zongquan is a farmer. His family has several milk cows and over a dozen Chinese acres of farmland. His wife now has to do all the work on the farm. When she was finally able to make it into town, she got severe carsickness and could not eat or drink the whole day. In the end, when she returned home after midnight, she still hadn’t located her husband. After over ten days had passed, she still had not received any notice from Jiaozhou Court. When she called Jiaozhou Court, someone told her that Mr. Yang had been secretly sentenced to four years in prison. The person hung up the phone after this one sentence. When she called back immediately and asked where Mr. Yang was, the answer was, “Don’t know.” The phone was again hung up.
