Ms. Liu Yongfen and her husband Mr. Liu Ying'e have two daughters. They all began practising Falun Gong before July 1999. After the persecution started, Ms. Liu's family has suffered tremendously.
Mother detained for eight years
Ms. Liu Yongfen, in her 60s, started to practise Falun Gong to help cure her illnesses. In December 2000, she was sentenced to four years in Hunan Province Women's Prison. She served another four years when she was sent to Baimalong Forced Labour Camp in May 2005. As a result of eight years of torture, she was paralysed from the waist down and many of her internal organs were severely damaged. She was released on bail in April 2009 to receive medical treatment. Upon returning home she continued to practise, and once again, she regained her health.
Father died from torment and stress
Before Mr. Liu Ying'e started to practise Falun Gong in March 1999, he was in the late stages of prostate cancer. Doctors told his family that he would not live much longer. However, he experienced miraculous improvements to his health after he started to practise. When the persecution started four months later, he saw his family being repeatedly arrested and detained, which reminded him of the brutal horrors of the Cultural Revolution, and so he stopped practising through fear for his own safety. As a result, his health started to deteriorate.
After Mr. Liu's wife and eldest daughter Ms. Liu Chunqin were sentenced to prison, the local police kept harassing him at home, calling and threatening him. He suffered a huge amount of mental pressure, and he was in critical condition. He could hardly walk or take care of himself. Despite his condition, police forcibly took his younger daughter Ms. Liu Xueqin to a brainwashing centre. He did not see his wife or eldest daughter again before he died.
Eldest daughter detained for six years
Ms. Liu Chunqin was formerly employed by the Hengyang City Steel Rolling Factory. She was arrested five times, and detained for a total of six years. In December 2000, she was detained for eight months. In September 2002, she was sentenced to four years in Hunan Province Women's Prison together with her mother. Then in November 2006 she was detained in Baimalong Forced Labour Camp for one year, again with her mother. When Ms. Liu Chunqin returned home in December 2007, she was forced to leave home to avoid being arrested again.
During six years of detention Ms. Liu Chunqin was brutally beaten, force-fed and not allowed to sleep for long periods of time.
Youngest daughter sent to a forced labour camp twice
Ms. Liu Xueqin is an employee of the Zhuzhou City Commercial Bank. She was arrested five times and sent to a forced labour camp twice. She was also forced into early retirement by her employer.
In December 2000, Ms. Liu Xueqin was detained for 15 days. She was held in a forced labour camp for 15 months, from April 2005 to July 2006. In April 2007, she was arrested and sent to Baimalong Women's Forced Labour Camp for more than one year. Her mother and older sister were sent to the same labour camp during October 2007.
Mother and daughter arrested again
Five officers from Zhuzhou Domestic Security Division stormed into Ms. Liu Yongfen's home and arrested her and her daughter Liu Chunqin on the evening of September 14th, 2011. They confiscated their computer and 1,700 yuan1 in cash. Ms. Liu Chunqin is still being detained in Zhuzhou First Detention Centre, and her mother Liu Yongfen was taken away by her former employer, the Xiangdong Iron Mine in Chaling County. Her situation is unknown.
Ms. Liu's family has been torn apart by the Chinese Communist Party's persecution of Falun Gong. This is only one example of countless families suffering in China because of the persecution.
