Ms. Xu Jianxin, in her 60s, is an employee of the Weifang Carton Factory. Although her income is low, she still made donations to help victims of the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake in Sichuan Province. In 1999 and 2000, she went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong and was arrested by officers from the Weifang Liaison Office in Beijing. She was taken back to Weifang and imprisoned at her work unit for several days. Local police and supervisors at the factory extorted about 10,000 yuan1 from her.

Ms. Xu's husband is not a practitioner, but he was arrested for putting up a Falun Gong flyer on the street in the Spring of 2008. The police broke into their home and confiscated Ms. Xu's Falun Gong books and the couple's personal belongings. Ms. Xu's husband was later taken to a forced labour camp. After being subjected to various forms of torture, he developed a cerebral hemorrhage and lost consciousness several times. His hospital medical expenses now total several thousand yuan.

The police tried to extort an additional 20,000 yuan from Ms. Xu. When she refused to pay, officials from the residential committee cut the electricity to her home, forcing her and her family to live without electricity for months. One of her children eventually managed to pay the officials the money, and then their electricity was restored.

Officials at the 610 Office (an organisation of special agents just for persecuting Falun Gong) called for a meeting with all the residential committees in Weifang in early June 2011, and ordered them to submit a list of Falun Gong practitioners in their area. Agents from the 610 Office then arrested practitioners on June 27th based on the compiled lists. Ms. Xu was one of them and was taken to a brainwashing centre, which is located within an enclosed courtyard of a school. The courtyard is signposted as a learning centre.

After Ms. Xu's husband was released from the hospital, he needed 24-hour medical care. Her eighty-year-old father also needed someone to take care of him. Ms. Xu's arrest left her family in a very difficult situation.

610 Office agents beat Ms. Xu at the brainwashing centre and tried to extort more money from her. Angered by her refusal, they took her to the Second Women's Forced Labour Camp in Wangcun in August 2011. She is still being held at the camp.
