My mother used to be a lay Buddhist, and would often go to temples for long periods of time to focus on cultivation. While staying at a temple in 2006, she fell and broke her leg. She underwent surgery at a local hospital, which connected the broken bones with steel plates. A month after returning home, she went back to the hospital for an X-ray. The doctor said that the bones were not setting correctly. It was another three months before the doctor did another X-ray. This time the doctor said that another operation was necessary as a piece of bone from somewhere else in the body was needed to fill the gap where the bones had not set correctly. My mum was scared about having another operation at her age.
I had introduced Falun Gong to my mother before, but she didn't want to practise. So I used this opportunity to talk to her again. During this time, Teacher wrote the article, “Disintegrate Completely All the Meddling Deities in the Three Realms that Have a Hand in Interfering with Fa-Rectification.” A practitioner had come to my home to talk to my mother about Falun Gong. She immediately expressed an interest and wanted to start practising. That was March 2, 2007, when my mother was 79 years old. These were all Teachers' arrangements, as He does not want to leave any predestined people behind.
My mother cleaned out all of her books about Buddhism and images of worship that were in her home. She once held Zhuan Falun while reading and said, “This is the real Buddha Fa.” Every day, she studied the Fa and did the exercises. She still could not stand up, so she would practice in a sitting position. Each time she closed her eyes, she would see Teacher smiling at her. After only a few days, Teacher began to purify her body. She had a fever and the symptoms of a really bad cold. When she recovered, all of her illnesses had disappeared. She had suffered from inflammation of the kidneys for many years and had rheumatoid arthritis for 48 years, but these illnesses along with other minor ailments disappeared.
When my mum had another X-ray at the hospital just a few months later, she found that her broken bones had healed completely and were perfectly formed. The doctor thought it was impossible, as this condition normally required surgery. The eldest of my younger brothers had a classmate who was the deputy director of the Orthopedic Department at the hospital. He knew that I practised Falun Gong, and when I told him that my mother had started to practise, he simply smiled to acknowledge that he understood.
One day last year, the upper right side of my mother's back was hurting badly. She was not able to sleep or lie down for two days. Even sending forth righteous thoughts was not helping. She said, “Practitioners often send righteous thoughts for fellow practitioners who are not feeling well. Could you organize other practitioners to come and share their experiences and send righteous thoughts for me?” I invited three practitioners to come to my home. We shared experiences and sent forth righteous thoughts for two hours. After they left, my mum felt a little better, but she was still unable to lie down because of the pain. I said, “Do not seek externally. Teacher tells us that we should always examine ourselves first no matter what we encounter. Looking inward is the key to our cultivation.”
As my mother sat there and started to think with a clear mind, she came to a realize that she was experiencing this discomfort because she had always thought that there was something on her back. She would feel as if something was happening at that spot every day. She was too attached to the sensations in her body and was putting too much thought into it. So she realized that she asking for it. As soon as she identified her attachment, the pain disappeared and she got better. She said cheerfully, “Teacher really takes care of me. I have to do well in cultivation.” Now my mother cultivates well and always examines herself first no matter what she encounters. She has truly experienced that looking inward is the magical tool in cultivation.
