Wang Shenggui, a 35-year-old monk from Yuquan Taoist Temple, Tianshui City, Gansu Province, started practising Falun Dafa in 1999. In December 2000, local police went to the temple and found a copy of Zhuan Falun that Wang Shenggui was reading. They took Wang into custody at Qincheng District Smokers' Centre for 3 months. During that time, the police tried to force him to write a guarantee statement, but Wang remained firm to his beliefs. On March 9, 2001, he was sent back to his hometown in Min County, where he was detained for another 4 months. Wang started a hunger strike there to protest the illegal detention. While he was on hunger strike, the detention centre did not make any effort to keep him alive. Wang died in mid-July, more than 40 days later. Authorities of the Min County Detention Centre lied to his relatives that Wang died from illnesses and efforts were made to save him, but to no avail.
