Mr. Zhao Shenxing from Wu'an, Hebei was sent to a forced labour camp three times. He suffered a mental breakdown as a result of torture at the Handan City Forced Labour Camp. Mr. Zhao passed away on November 20th, 2011, at the age of 66.
Being the first expert mushroom grower in Wu'an City, Mr. Zhao grew mushrooms that were not only large, but also of high quality. He sold them in small quantities, but charged wholesale prices. As a Falun Gong practitioner, he always acted according to the principles of "Truthfulness, Compassion, and Forbearance." When customers came to buy mushrooms, he was always fair in his dealings.
When Wu'an City Deputy Mayor Han Baokui and Wu'an Township deputy Party secretary Yang Yanbin, slandered Falun Gong at a local party meeting, they pressured Mr. Zhao to declare his position. Right away he declared that Falun Gong was good. Han Baokui, Yang Yanbin and people from “610 Office” (an organisation of special agents just for persecuting Falun Gong) immediately arrested Mr. Zhao and sent him to the Wu'an City Detention Centre. Later, he served one year at a forced labour camp.
Around June 7th, 2004, Division I Director Zhang Lihua and Deputy Director Zhang Taibao from the Wu'an City Police Department searched Mr. Zhao's home without a warrant. They took him to the Wu'an City Detention Centre, where he was so brutally tortured that he suffered beyond measure both physically and mentally. After that, he had a blank stare and ate whatever was in front of him, including faeces.
When Mr. Zhao's son heard that his father had been tortured to the point of a mental breakdown, he went to Zhang Lihua's home to request his father's release. Instead of opening the door, Zhang called the police, who arrested Mr. Zhao's son. In addition, Zhang ordered the police to threaten Mr. Zhao's family members so that they would not go to his home again. Taking no responsibility for the condition of Mr. Zhao, Zhang sent him to Handan City Forced Labour Camp in September 2004.
As soon as Mr. Zhao arrived in the labour camp, he was isolated in a cell. Guard Wang Zhiming slapped his face hard for a very long time. Wang punched Mr. Zhao and kicked him, as well as beat him with a belt. Mr. Zhao suffered many physical injuries because of the torture.
Guard Wang was afraid other people would see how brutally Mr. Zhao had been treated, so he washed the blood off Mr. Zhao's face with water and then sent him back to the isolated cell. Guards Wang Zhiming, Liu Shuming (from Daming City), Zhang Yunshi (from Guantao City), Qian Guoning (from Handan City), Wang Hailin (from Xingtai City), Wu Zhijun (from Xingtai City) and others took turns keeping an eye on Mr. Zhao. They did not allow him to sleep and forced him to stand for a very long time. They also forced him to listen to their twisted arguments. If Mr. Zhao refused to listen, they would beat him.
Gao Fei from the “610 Office” and guard Xing Yansheng, continued to torture Mr. Zhao. Gao Fei separated Mr. Zhao's arms and handcuffed them to two bunk beds. Then they shocked him with electric batons and beat him with rubber batons for a very long time. They tortured him without restraint. Guo Fei (from Ci County) beat Mr. Zhao so hard with a wooden club that he broke it.
After the severe physical and mental abuse, Mr. Zhao finally collapsed and suffered a mental breakdown. Guard Wang Zhiming started telling others that Mr. Zhao was just pretending to be mentally unbalanced and that it was the practice of Falun Gong that made him like that. They continued to persecute Mr. Zhao. Wang and others used a short rope to tie his head, hands and feet together, and then beat him. During that time, they also injected him with unknown drugs.
One week before Mr. Zhao was conditionally released for medical reasons, the labour camp director and guard Yao Jianming, called the labour camp doctor requesting that something be done about Mr. Zhao's injuries caused by the beatings and electric shocks. The doctor could do nothing to hasten the healing of Mr. Zhao's many injuries. Even if his injuries could be healed, the teeth that had been knocked out by the beatings could not be restored. Mr. Zhao later recalled that guard Xing Yansheng knocked him down on the floor and kicked him really hard in the head. He could not remember anything after that incident and became mentally unstable.
Policemen from the Chengguan Police Station of Wu'an arrested Mr. Zhao again at home on July 13th, 2008. Hou Xiangqian, deputy director of the Wu'an Police Department and the chief of the Chengguan Police Station ordered Mr. Zhao to serve a three-year term at the Handan City Forced Labour Camp. Mr. Zhao was released for medical treatment because he was mentally unstable.
Due to years of persecution, Mr. Zhao passed away at home on November 20th, 2011.
