On August 24th, 2012 Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Liu Jingmei was arrested by a group of police officers around 9 a.m. The police included two agents from the Yishui County Domestic Security Division and Duan Jianfei from the Xujiahu Police Station. They took away Ms. Liu's computers, TV set-top boxes and many of her personal belongings.

Ms. Liu was an employee of the Tractor Parts Plant of Zhuge Town, Yishui County, Shandong Province. She used to suffer from gastritis, heart disease and a slipped disc; however, after she began practising Falun Gong in March 1997, all her illnesses soon disappeared. She also no longer quarrelled with her husband, and her family became harmonious. Seeing the great changes in her, many of Ms. Liu's relatives and neighbours started to practise Falun Gong and everyone benefitted physically and mentally.

Since the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) launched the persecution of Falun Gong in 1999, Ms. Liu has been arrested by local officials and police officers several times because she persisted in her belief in Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance.

The first time she was arrested, the authorities tried to force her to give up her belief. Zhuge Town Party Secretary Tian, Mayor Wang Jianhua, along with Song Yuwang and Ruan Bo made her stand in the sun with her nose touching a wall, and both her arms held straight out. They put bricks on her hands and deprived her of sleep for three days and nights. In addition, they extorted 3,000 yuan1 from her.

In late September 2000, she was detained at the Gaozhuang Town Brainwashing Centre and tortured. She was forced to run with stones in her sleeves, to stay in a half-squatting position for prolonged periods, and burned with cigarettes--among other forms of torture. On one occasion four or five people punched and kicked her and then beat her with batons. She was later extorted 4,000 yuan before being released. After she returned home, she was frequently harassed.

In late 2000 Ms. Liu travelled to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong, but was arrested on Tiananmen Square. She started a hunger protest and refused to give her name and address. The police ordered prisoners in the detention centre to beat her, and she was later sent to the Fengjiazhuang Brainwashing Centre in Yishui County, and detained for two weeks. After March 10th, 2001, she was again detained in a labour camp, for three years.

On December 6th, 2004, she and five other practitioners were arrested while they were explaining the facts about Falun Gong to people in Tianbao Township, Lu County. The head of the Lu County Detention Centre, along with several officers, beat her with rubber batons. Ms. Liu's bottom became black with bruises from the beatings, and she had blood in her urine for four to five days. After she was detained in the Yishui Detention Centre for a month, she was sent to the Jinan Women's First Labour Camp and detained for three years.

Since Jiang Zemin, [former leader of China and instigator of the persecution] and his group started persecuting Falun Gong in 1999, Ms. Liu’s family has been subjected to severe persecution, both physically and mentally. Her father, Mr. Liu Benshan, her mother Ms. Yu Junhuai, her brother Mr. Liu Jinghua, and her sisters, Ms. Liu Jingxiang, Ms. Liu Jingyun and Ms. Liu Jingjun have been arrested, detained, subjected to brainwashing and tortured multiple times. Among other forms of harassment and persecution, Ms. Liu Jingyun was dismissed from her workplace. Her dad, Mr. Liu Benshan, was once sent to a labour camp, but was not admitted. Her sister, Ms. Liu Jingchun was sentenced and subjected to forced labour. The authorities have also extorted tens of thousands of yuan from her family over the past years.
