Shen Deming was very firm in cultivation practice. He attended a Falun Dafa lecture in Wuhan City in 1993. After July 20, 1999, when Deming heard how those in power defamed Falun Dafa with fabricated stories, in order to deceive people around the world, tears streamed down his face. He was determined to tell people the truth; that Falun Dafa is righteous, that it teaches people to cultivate Truth, Compassion and Tolerance, and to improve their moral quality. He thought that after the government learned the truth, it would restore Falun Dafa's reputation, and Teacher Li's as well. In 1999, together with other practitioners, he went twice to Beijing to appeal to the government to stop persecuting Falun Dafa. The second time, in November 1999, he was illegally detained at the Appeals Office. [at the time, the police had taken over the Appeals Office]. After he was escorted back to his hometown, Xiantao City, he was kept in detention for more than 30 days. He suffered both physically and spiritually in the detention centre. With the efforts of his family members, he was released, but the police extorted 6000 Yuan [equal to a year's income of an average worker in China] from him. He was then sentenced to one year of forced labour, in spite of the money he had paid. After he was released, he went to Shenzhen City. When Shen Deming was in Shenzhen City, he worked during the day, and went out to distribute truth-clarifying materials at night. Once, when he had time off, he wrote a lot of truth-clarifying materials in a small rented room, then he posted them in many places for people to see. The police discovered this and arrested him. His family members had to look for him everywhere, and eventually were told that he was detained at the Jiujiechun Detention Centre. When he was released half a year later, he was very weak and thin. Even worse, he had suffered a mental breakdown. He died on September 8, 2002 due to the severity of the torture he received. The details about the actual torture during his detention are still unknown.
