Letter to the Editor: My Beloved Motherland, When Can We Have True Freedom?
2004-06-05I called my classmate in China just now, and was told that one of my best friends was imprisoned and eventually tortured to death simply because of practicing Falun Gong. I am not a Falun Gong practitioner, and don't have much knowledge of Falun Gong. But I do know my best friend very well, he was a truly righteous and honest person. I really cannot understand and rationalise why China would even regard having a belief as illegal. I feel really very sorry about it. My beloved motherland, when can we have true freedom? -

Letter from an Irish County Councillor to the Chinese Ambassador
2004-05-27"Amongst my favourite possessions is a book of “Chinese Proverbs” which I often quote to colleagues and audiences. The plight of the two young students reminds me of the proverb:- Confucius, Spring and Autumn Period: “Do not worry if others do not understand you, worry if you do not understand them” I would be very appreciative if you could use your influence, to have what ever restraints prevent these students returning to Ireland lifted."
