1. Ms. Liang Biyan
Ms. Liang Biyan was a young worker from Nanning City who was sent to Guangxi Province Women's Forced Labour Camp and suffered inhumane tortures. The prison police prompted the drug offenders to handcuff Ms. Liang and hang her up from the handcuffs every day in order to force her to give up Falun Gong. They also stripped her completely and threatened to display her publicly. She often suffered beatings and verbal abuse. After Liang Biyan served her term in the labour camp, she was sent to the Detention and Education Centre for further detention, without being formally sentenced. There were more than 20 practitioners at that time in the Detention and Education Centre. Some had been sent there directly from the labour camp; some had been abducted from their homes or schools. Liang Biyan started a hunger strike to protest the illegal detention. After more than 60 days on hunger strike, she was released unconditionally. Most of the practitioners also walked free from the Detention and Education Centre. However, some practitioners were sentenced to the forced labour camp after they couldn't withstand the continuous days and nights of interrogation.
2. Ms. Cui Yu
Ms. Cui Yu was from Guilin City, Guangxi Province. She suffered physical abuse from the prison police. She was not allowed to sit, and was required to stand or squat 24 hours a day, which caused her legs and feet to swell out of shape. During the hot summer, she was only allowed to take a shower once every one or two months. She was often not allowed to sleep, and suffered beatings and verbal abuse from the drug offenders. In addition, her use of the toilet was restricted. In May 2003, since Cui Yu resisted the persecution at the labour camp, the prison police ordered the drug offenders to drag her to the cafeteria. She was forcibly thrown to the ground. The skin around her lower back was torn after having been dragged over the ground. Her pants were pulled off by the dragging, exposing her lower body. Two sets of clothing were worn out this way. Eventually she was sent to solitary confinement and handcuffed 24 hours a day with no sleep.
3. Ms. Mu Linmao
Ms. Mu Linmao had been held at the detention centre due to her persistence in studying Falun Dafa. After she was released from the detention centre in March 2001, the police abducted her and took her to the "brainwashing class" at the Detention and Education Centre. Two weeks later, she was secretly sent to a forced labour camp without her family being informed. Her mother, in her 70s and in poor health, had to wander around to try to determine her daughter's whereabouts. She eventually learned that her daughter had been sent to the labour camp a month earlier.
After Mu Linmao arrived at the camp, the police immediately arranged two drug offenders to watch her every movement. She was not allowed to talk to other steadfast practitioners. The police arranged for collaborators [former practitioners who have renounced Falun Dafa due to severe torture and brainwashing] to take turns trying to brainwash her. In September 2001, the prison police commanded the drug offenders to hang her up, along with Ms. Ma Shaofang (hands tied over the head and feet tied together) from morning until 2 a.m. the next day. They were untied temporarily during mealtime. Both of them had deep marks on their hands and feet as a result of this abuse, and Ma Shaofang's feet were bleeding. She was then sent to solitary confinement. Ten days later, Mu Linmao's feet were also swollen and bleeding. She also was sent to solitary confinement, which they shared with spiders, mice and cockroaches. They were not allowed to shower or to change their clothing. In the daytime, their clothes were completely soaked with sweat because of the heat; at night, they suffered from insect bites. Ms. Mu and Ms. Ma were released from solitary confinement after about ten days, only to suffer continued daily physical torture until about 2 a.m. A week later, Ma Shaofang was sent to the No. 1 Division. Mu Linmao's feet became worse, and the wounds were festering. She had a high fever. She couldn't wear shoes and had to walk barefoot. Nevertheless, the police continued daily physical torture until 2 a.m., before allowing her to go upstairs for rest. They finally restrained themselves a little bit when they saw her condition grow progressively worse. Later, Mu Linmao's feet healed without any treatments. Then the persecution started again. She was forced to stand in the athletic field every day under the sun from 5:30 in the morning to 3 a.m. the next day, for so-called self-examination, over a period of two months.
The prison police would arrange a special "watcher" for every practitioner. The watcher was allowed to beat or verbally abuse the practitioner at will. An older practitioner, Ms. Lin Yunying, suffered verbal abuse every day from the watcher, who would follow her everywhere, even to the toilet. When the watcher went to the toilet, the practitioner had to be around. Sometimes, when the practitioner took a little longer time in the toilet, the watcher might scold or even drag her out before she could finish.
In May 2002, because Mu Linmao was a little slow in eating breakfast, she was kicked by the prisoners, who told her that they could do whatever they wanted to steadfast practitioners like her. During one breakfast, Mu Linmao questioned the prison police in front of everyone. Immediately, some prisoners tried to cover her mouth. She insisted on speaking out. Eventually the police had no choice but to allow her to speak. She asked three questions: "1. Do you prison police grant the prisoners on duty the power to abuse practitioners at will? 2. You claim not to apply force in transforming. Why do you arrange the watchers and restrain our normal activities? We are even not allowed to look at or smile at each other. 3. When the prisoners beat the newcomer Ms. Zhang, why did you not try to stop them? What you say is different from what you do, isn't it?"
Later Mu Linmao wrote down what she said and handed it to the prison police. The team leader, Lu, held a meeting in the afternoon to respond to her questions. He denied that Ms. Zhang had been beaten and said it was only Ms. Mu's gossip. Regarding the beating of Mu Linmao, he said further investigation was needed. Mu Linmao was later transformed to the No. 2 Division and the investigation ended with no result. Mu Linmao's term in the labour camp was extended one more year without reason. She was finally released in June 2003.
