On December 8, 2003, the family of Wu Yuan, a middle school teacher from Beilu, Lingyuan City, received a notice from the Chenyang Dabei Second Prison. Liang Xiuyu, Wu Yuan's wife, went to the prison hospital on the morning of December 10 and could hardly recognise the emaciated figure of her husband. When Wu Yuan tried to say something to her, the guards immediately interrupted him and sent Liang Xiuyu away. Later that same day, Wu's family received notice of his death. His body was bruised blue and purple, and his ears and nose were stuffed with cotton balls. The prison refused to provide medical records or to carry out an autopsy.
Wu Yuan was a 44-year-old Falun Gong practitioner. He worked as a maths teacher at the Beilu Middle School in Lingyuan City, Liaoning Province. After he began practising Falun Dafa, he often helped poor students pay for their school fees. Students and their families all regarded Mr. Wu as a good person and teacher.
In the summer of 2002, Wu Yuan taught his graduating class to follow the principles of "Truthfulness, Compassion and Forbearance," which are the guiding principles of Falun Gong. On the afternoon of August 14, 2002, the head of the Public Security Bureau and the "610 Office,"* Fu Yanling, brought a group of policemen, along with Wu Baosi, the head of the Beilu Police Station, and a Mr. Ju (both of whom have presently been transferred elsewhere) to Mr. Wu's home. They abducted Mr. Wu anresent him to Lingyuan Detention Center. Fu Yanling and others intimidated Wu's students and forced them to testify against him and sign statements slandering his character.
On September 26, 2002, Wu Yuan was unjustly sentenced to four years in Dabei Prison at Chenyang. His 84-year-old mother, who was sick in bed, watched helplessly as her son was taken away. Unable to bear the worry and indignation, she passed away a few days later.
On December 8, 2003, Mr. Wu's son, Wu Gaoliang, received an unsigned letter from the 11th Confine Section of Chenyang Dabei Secondary Prison, stating that his father had aesophageal cancer and was to be released back to his family. On the morning of December 10, Wu Yuan's wife arrived at the hospital ward in Chenyang Prison and saw her husband's emaciated figure rolled up on a hospital bed. She didn't recognize him at first and had to ask him whether he was her husband. Wu Yuan nodded with difficulty. Crying, she embraced him for the last time. When he said something, the police interrupted and urged her to complete the procedures for bailing him out for medical treatment. She was forced to leave after only 30 minutes of seeing her husband.
At 6 p.m. that day, Mr. Wu's wife received a message from the prison stating that her husband had died. At 3 p.m. the next day, Mr. Wu's wife saw her husband's body at the funeral home. His belly was bruised black and blue, his back was covered with red marks and his nose and ears were stuffed with cotton balls. Liang Xiuyu asked the policemen why cotton balls had been stuffed in his nose and ears, and they told her that was the rule for cremation. She requested an autopsy report and a documented medical history, but the prison refused to provide them, stating that the medical history had already been sent to the coroner. Liang Xiuyu knew that her husband had been tortured to death. She had no place to sue, and nowhere to seek justice.
