Zhang Cuiying had to endure eight months of incarceration and torture in various Chinese prisons. She was freed, with the help of her husband and the aid of the Australian government. Mrs. Zhang is an Australian citizen. After regaining her freedom, she and her art have traveled around the world, to bring attention to the plight of the practitioners in China.

When I heard that a practitioner would present an exhibition in Hamburg I was quite happy. With great difficulty, some practitioners and I tried to find suitable rooms for the exhibition and eventually succeeded. The rooms were not very nice, but we had the freedom to fix them up to suit us, any way we wanted. We decided to paint the rooms white. In the beginning there were three of us. It was not easy. Only one of us had done something like this before. But that did not deter us. We simply acted and did not waste much time thinking. For some reason the method in our painting this room was not important. What was important was the result of our effort. We had to have our work finished in 1-1/2 days. The rooms were huge and had high ceilings. That was also not a problem. We painted for six hours straight. Unfortunately none of us had brought any food, only a small amount of chocolate. Under normal circumstances we would have quit and bought some food, but we didn’t; we kept on painting without giving it much more thought. When we finished the two rooms did not look 100% “professionally” painted, but everything looked nice and white. We managed to bring light into the darkness.

Even from the beginning I had a hunch that this was not merely an exhibition of Cui-Ying Zhang’s works, but also and exhibition by us, the Falun Dafa practitioners. This feeling became stronger after I had viewed the pictures for the first time. They shone. They glowed. They emitted calm, decency and devotion.

Many people came to the opening and some of us gave speeches, Mrs. Zahng included. She glowed like her pictures. It was indeed a harmonious atmosphere. A journalist from the magazine “Der Spiegel” came to the exhibit (Translator: “Der Spiegel” is the German equivalent to “Time Magazine”). Earlier in the day Mrs. Zhang had already submitted to an interview with him, but he insisted on viewing the exhibition. He even spoke Chinese. I noticed that he was genuinely interested and touched.

Upon reading Mrs. Zhang’s story and finding out that she will have a one-woman show in Hamburg, he right away wrote a poem for her, in calligraphy, exclusively for her! Even she was quite surprised. I had heard that it is a great honor when one is presented with a calligraphy.

Visitors over the next four days were genuinely interested in Falun Gong. This was truly a great occasion to spread the Fa. Through this exhibit it was possible to tell some more people the truth and to introduce them to Truthfulness, Compassion and Forbearance.
