According to a report by Radio France Internationale on December 5th, former French Socialist Party Culture Minister Jack Lang wrote an open letter to President Jacques Chirac, urging Chirac to raise questions to the visiting Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao about the conditions of the TV transmissions of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Jack Lang was the Culture Minister and is currently MP for Pas-de-Calais. In an open letter to Chirac, Jack Lang wrote that according to the available information, the Chinese government plans to not carry out true direct broadcasting during the 2008 Beijing Olympics, instead the broadcasts would be delayed by a few seconds. He pointed out that behind this technical issue of delaying a broadcast for a few seconds is Beijing’s true intention of avoiding all pictures of demonstrations. If this is true, then Beijing must be condemned.

A group of French MPs called upon President Chirac to apply pressure to the visiting Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on the human rights issues in China.

On Monday, about one hundred MPs urged Chirac and de Villepin that during their meeting with Wen Jiabao, they should demand concrete measures to improve the human rights situation in China, especially the human rights problems in Tibet and encourage China to move towards a democratic society.
