We are saddened once again to learn that the police have pressed an externally motivated charge against nine Falun Gong practitioners for their peaceful activity of expressing humanitarian concerns about the plight of Falun Gong practitioners in China.
The alleged "assembly" refers to the distribution of flyers and the display of banners and posters on October 22nd, 23rd last year informing the people of Singapore about the mass renunciations of communist party members and the brutal persecution of Falun Gong practitioners in China.
It is not coincidental that the date of the original charge fell on 4th July 2006, the day when ex-Chinese Vice Premier Li Lanqing was in Singapore to receive an honorary degree on 6th July 2006, as arranged by the Singapore government. The date of the trial was subsequently adjourned to 14th July 2006.
It is deeply regrettable that levying a charge against Falun Gong practitioners has become a convenient and repeated tactic to curry favour with the Communist Regime in China.
