Xu Xinhui is a seven-year-old girl who is currently separated from her father as a result of the persecution of Falun Gong. She is a young refugee currently living in Malaysia. She wrote a letter and sent it along with a picture to the United Nations Refugee Agency.
Dear Sirs and Madams at the United Nations Refugee Agency:
Greetings!
My name is Xu Xinhui. I am seven years old and come from China. I am a young refugee under the protection of the United Nations. To be honest, I do not like being a refugee, but my mum says we have difficulties in China.
When I was a little over one year old, my mum left me. My dad said I would often wake up in the middle of the night and look for her. After a while I forgot about mum. I grew up with my dad and my grandparents.
I went to a kindergarten at age three. I saw many other boys and girls had mums and I asked dad, "Do I have a mum?" dad said, "Yes you do. Your mum loves you very much, but she went to a place far, far away."
When I was three, dad took me some place and told me I could see mum there. I was very happy. I saw many people wearing black clothes and I later learned they were police officers. They took dad and me to a place and I saw mum although we were separated by a thick pane of glass. I saw that she was very thin. She started crying as soon as she saw me, and she was very sad. We talked through a phone and I asked mum, "Why are we calling each other when we are so close?" mum laughed. Later I was told the place where we visited mum was a prison. I’ve always remembered this visit.
Dad took me to a hotel on my fifth birthday and I saw mum again. She was still thin but we happily celebrated my birthday. I asked dad, "Why doesn’t mum come home? Why does she live in a hotel?" Dad did not answer my question and mum told me that it’s a brainwashing class for Falun Gong practitioners. Mum continued to practise Falun Gong after she was released from prison, so the bad people would not let her go home.
Mum finally came home after I was five years old. She took good care of me. She taught me to draw pictures and told me stories. Mum also takes good care of my grandparents and is kind to other people. She often helps people who have problems. I said to her, "Mum, I think you are a good person; why did the police take you away and put you in prison?" She said, "Because I practise Falun Gong. Falun Gong tells people to be good according to Truth, Compassion and Forbearance. There are many people who practise Falun Gong. The Communist Party and Jiang Zemin feared there would be too many good people, so they arrested us." I studied Falun Dafa with mum and got rid of my bad habits of crying and throwing temper tantrums.
Dad went to the U.S. less than one year after mum came home. Mum said, "Dad won’t come back. The U.S. is a free and civilised society and he can freely practise Falun Gong there." I was very happy for dad. Later, dad told us to leave China. Mum and I came to Malaysia as refugees.
I have been living in Malaysia for nearly one year now. I was happy at first, but when I saw many boys and girls going to school with their backpacks, I really wanted to go to school, but mum told me Malaysia doesn’t allow refugees to go to school. I really want to go to school!
I have always been a smart kid. I recognised many written words when I was three years old, and I could read books at four. I completed second-grade math courses by myself within six months after I came to Malaysia. I can remember a poem after someone reads it two or three times, and many adults call me a genius. Mum says Falun Dafa gives me wisdom because I started listening to Teacher Li’s lectures when I was still in her tummy. Falun Gong practitioners are very intelligent. Many scientists invented products that benefit mankind after studying Falun Dafa. Falun Dafa is a righteous Way, and it’s not like what the Communist Party says. Mum says the Communist Party tells lots of lies and deceives people.
I miss dad more and more. He has always loved me and I love him very much. I am afraid when I’m separated from my dad. When airplanes fly across the sky I would think, "Are they going to America?" I made lots of paper planes and I hope they can take me to America, where I can go to school and see dad, and my family will never be separated again. Sirs and Madams at the United Nations, can you deliver my wish to the people at the U.S. Consulate? The Communist Party persecuted my family and broke it up. Can you help us reunite? Please help me go to America as soon as possible. I will study hard in America and become an outstanding person, and I will be a useful person. Thank you!
Xu Xinhui
