Mr. Chang Xianlu lives in Huanren Town, Huanren County. In early 1999 he began practising Falun Dafa. On February 20th, 2000, he went to Beijing to appeal on behalf of Falun Dafa. He was intercepted by the Beijing police and personnel in charge of controlling the appeals from different provinces. The police from Huanren County handcuffed him for a whole night and took him and the other Falun Gong practitioners back to Huanren County the next day. He was imprisoned in the county detention centre.
Guard Yang Zhong (male) at the detention centre forced six or seven practitioners to raise both hands above their head's for a whole morning. In the afternoon he tortured these practitioners with the "stretching punishment." Yang Zhong even stepped on each practitioner's back to aggravate the torture. The practitioners were not released until the next afternoon.
The Political and Judiciary Committee and the Huanren County Police Department held a so-called victory celebration meeting. Mr. Chang did not cooperate with the Party personnel. Guard Yang Zhong forced him to put on foot shackles and then viciously struck his back with a baton to make him run. This torture is called "running in shackles."
After repeated beatings, Mr. Chang's back turned black, and even the criminal inmates in the same cell were appalled! The scars from making him "run in shackles" are still visible even now. The guard also used the "gate god" method, pulling Mr. Chang's hands out from between the bars of the cell gate and handcuffing his wrists from the outside. This made it easier for the guard to continue torturing Mr. Chang. Mr. Chang was tortured like this for half a day.
Two weeks later, Mr. Chang Xianlu was released and taken home by his family.
On April 4th, 2002, at around noon when he and his wife went downstairs to do business, suddenly a group of people took them from their home and forced them into a vehicle. Their heads were covered with cloth, and they were hit whenever they moved. Their hands were handcuffed behind their backs, and they were pummelled after getting out of the vehicle. They were taken to an unknown hotel to a room on the second floor and separated.
The police tried extorting a confession from Mr. Chang Xianlu by torturing him, using such brutal methods as handcuffing him behind his back and "splitting the legs wide open" while forcing his head to the ground. As if that was not enough, the officers frequently trampled on his thighs to aggravate the pain. One policemen viciously beat his forehead, face, and ears with shoes, causing eardrum damage. Party personnel had been monitoring his telephone line. The police continued torturing Mr. Chang until after 10 p.m. They then transported him to the Huanren County Detention Centre. While this was happening, Huanren County policeman Yu Xiangjiang led six or seven other officers to invade Mr. Chang's home and search for Falun Dafa materials. They only released Mr. Chang's wife after finding nothing "illegal" in their home.
On April 4th, Changchun City Police Department Chief Mr. Li and others tied Mr. Chang with ropes and took him to Changchun City, where they tortured him in a room at the Jingyuetan Hotel. Mr. Chang was tied to a tiger bench1. The police shocked Mr. him all over his entire body with two large electric batons, trying to force him to "confess." The police found no evidence, as there was no evidence to begin with. Desperate to force a confession from Mr. Chang, they started to cover his head with double-layer plastic bags until he passed out, and then repeating the torture once he revived. When this failed to work, they put a metal bucket over his head and struck it with a club. While all this was going on, they were depriving him of sleep and would shock him if he began to nod off. After three days of this brutal torture, which failed to yield any results, the police imprisoned him in Tiebei Detention Centre in Changchun City.
After five or six days, a group of police officers took Mr. Chang from the detention centre back to the same hotel room (this was one of the places commonly used to secretly torture Falun Gong practitioners at that time) and strapped him to the "tiger bench." This time, they not only shocked him with electric batons (his genitals were injured from the electric shocks), one officer also stabbed his hand with chopsticks, drawing blood. The same officer then used pliers to crush his toes. As he was doing this the policeman said, "I'm going to squash them flat from top to bottom, and then squash them from left to right," causing all of his toes to turn purple. Another officer added, "Killing a Falun Gong practitioner doesn't count, since Jiang Zemin has given us a death quota." Still another officer squeezed Mr. Chang's nipples, drawing blood and staining his shirt. When the policemen took Mr. Chang, who had been tortured so badly that he was disoriented and did not even look human anymore, back to the detention centre, the detention centre officials did not dare to accept him. The detention centre only "agreed" to take Mr. Chang back after the police demanded it and threatened them.
On June 7th, 2002, after being imprisoned for several months and with no evidence, Mr. Chang Xianlu was sentenced by the Changchun police to two years at the Chaoyanggou Labour Camp in Changchun City. Simply for upholding his belief in "Truth-Compassion-Forbearance," Mr. Chang was tortured so brutally that he was covered with cuts and bruises. He now cannot clearly see objects that are only two metres away.
Note
1. "Tiger Bench": Prisoners are forced to sit on a small iron bench that is approximately 20 cm (6 inches) tall with their knees tied together. With their hands tied behind their backs or sometimes placed on their knees, they are forced to sit straight up and look straight ahead without movement for long periods of time.
