Ms. Xia Yuanlan, 68, lived in Urumqi City, Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region. Her husband was an employee of the Nonferrous Metallurgical Industry Research Institute. She lived with her three daughters after her husband passed away. She was constantly ill with a variety of ailments, but after she started practising Falun Gong, they disappeared. She stopped practising for a time because of the pressure of the persecution, but had returned to cultivation in recent years.
On February 21st, 2007, Ms. Xia was arrested with three other fellow practitioners when distributing materials exposing the persecution in Shuimogou District. The practitioners were detained by the police in Shuimogou District Detention Centre. The Urumqi City Middle Court held a trial on December 7th, 2007. Their case was submitted to the City Higher Court, but they never received a sentence.
At 8:30 p.m. on March 25th, 2008, the Shuimogou District Detention Centre personnel notified Ms. Xia's family to pick her up. They told her family that her heart disease had recurred. Her family took her to the Farm Coop Hospital, but her health did not improve, and she passed away. Her family was not allowed to visit her from the time she was arrested on February 21st, 2007, until the day she died.
