Ms. Wang Shuxia, 45, is originally from Dagujia Township, Faku County, Liaoning Province. She married and moved to Hujia Village, Xiaonan Town (formerly called Tiefa Town), Diaobingshan City. Her ex-husband's name is Ma Zhongquan, and they were divorced in 2001. They have two daughters.
In the winter of 1998, Ms. Wang was fortunate to begin learn Falun Gong; her physical and spiritual health greatly improved, and she lived a happy life. But in July 1999, the persecution began in China. Ms. Wang stepped forward to appeal for the right to practise Falun Gong, and was detained in the Diaobingshan City Detention Centre. Her youngest daughter was only three years old.
In January 2001, she was again arrested and detained in the Diaobingshan City Detention Centre. The administration transferred her to the Qianyuan Detention Centre in February 2001, where the centre's director Jin Pengfei (male) whipped her with a sharp-edged belt, shackled her, and verbally abused her. Ms. Wang suffered from a mental breakdown under these severe circumstances. Guard Yang Ke (male), Wang Zhantao (male), Yuan, Liu, Zhang (genders unknown, given names unknown), and Director Jin Pengfei all witnessed her abnormal behaviour. They took her to the Tiemei Corp General Hospital in March 2001, where she was injected with drugs and released in May 2001.
Upon returning home, she discovered that her husband was living with another woman, which caused her condition to worsen. She burnt her husband's clothes, then stepped on the burning clothes with her bare feet, resulting in the scarring of her toes. Her husband moved back to his parents' house with their children. In order to cover his immoral act, he locked Ms. Wang in her home alone. Her father-in-law would bring her food and water every day. She was in extreme pain because of her feet, and her neighbours could hear her crying. The former Tiefa Town Party Secretary Yue Junsheng (male, now Labor and Welfare Bureau Chief), Youth League Secretary Zhu Jin (male), and other Town officials all witnessed her tragic life.
Later, Ms. Wang's mother and older sister heard of this and forced her husband to pay 2,000 yuan1 for her to have a skin transplant operation done. Her feet healed.
In August 2001, Ms. Wang wrote "Falun Gong is good" on a piece of red cloth, and hung it by her window. Her husband reported her to the Village Administration. Village Chair Zhao Guofan (male) and Security Chair Lan (male, given name unknown) took her to be detained. During her detention, her husband paid her 1,400 yuan as a divorce fee.
In March 2002, Domestic Security Division Leader Zhang Fucai from the Diaobingshan City Police Department arrested her, had her sentenced to three years of forced labour, and took her to the Masanjia Labour Camp. Her mental disorder worsened. They locked her in solitary confinement for the first three months and tortured her by hanging her up by her wrists in rings. The scars on her wrists were still visible after six years. The guards tortured her by not providing her with any daily necessities or bedding. She only had a few packages of toilet paper, so she just slept on several layers of toilet paper on the cement floor. She was not allowed to talk, and her voice became weak.
She was released in the summer of 2005 with a very rough voice and penniless. She requested to review her divorce with civil officials, but the Town Party Secretary said she passed the appeal deadline. The community official processed welfare for her. She lived in her friends' house temporarily, disciplined herself according to the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance, and her physical condition returned to normal.
In the autumn of 2005, she rented a small room, borrowed a pedaling cart, and started a small business by selling steamed buns and boiled peanuts. She worked very hard, and she did not only make a living, but also could help her older daughter in college. She played videos exposing the persecution of Falun Gong in her booth, and she was arrested and detained again.
On January 15th, 2008, Judge Yang Peng (male) of the Diaobingshan City Court secretly sentenced Ms. Wang Shuxia to three years in prison. She appealed to the Tieling City Middle Court. The Second Court Hall Judge Xing (male, given name unknown) said she could be released if she could provide proof that she was mentally disordered. Her family went to many departments, and said they knew Ms. Wang had a mental illness before, but the Domestic Security Division group ordered that no one was allowed to give evidence that she was ill. Hence, the Tieling Middle Court did nothing but uphold her sentencing. On June 3rd, 2008, she was taken to the Pingluo Town Women's Prison located in Yuhong District, Shenyang City, Liaoning Province.
Only two days later, on June 5th, 2008, the prison guard notified local police that Ms. Wang had died. When her family rushed there, they found her body freezing cold, but they could still see the broken paper around her mouth and bruises on her neck and chest. It was clear she had not died naturally; she was tortured to death. The prison officials feared that her family would sue them, so they took the initiative to pay for all her funeral costs and offered 190,000 yuan in cash as compensation to buy their silence. Ms. Wang's body has been cremated, and her ashes are in Zhangzhuan Ash Storage in Xiaonan Town.
