At 8 p.m. on August 8th, 2008, Ms. Lu Yuying was in her home in Anning District, Lanzhou City, Gansu Province, when ten officers from the Chengguan Police Department forced their way in and arrested her. They also confiscated her son's school computer.
Ms. Lu Yuying is 45 years old. She started practising Falun Gong in 2000, and it changed her immensely.
Ms. Lu was a hot-tempered and careless person before practising Falun Gong. She used to be in the egg business at the Anning Market. Because of her temper, she often argued with customers, earning her the moniker, "Tyrant of the market." When she fought with men, the men would carry meat cleavers while she carried an axe. After becoming a practitioner, she was able to "not retaliate when beaten and not retaliate when cursed at." She followed Falun Gong's high standards, determined to become a gentle, virtuous woman.
Ms. Lu ran a clinic to treat burn victims and saw patients with different degrees of scalds and burns every day. Changing the medicine and bandages for a patient is very difficult due to the intense pain of a burn. Patients sometimes refused to allow their burned areas to be touched, and they screamed or cried. Before practising Falun Gong, Ms. Lu was unconcerned about this, and she would rip off the bandage on the burned area, causing the patients so much pain that they held their breath, gasped for air and sweat profusely. After taking up the practice, she often said that as a medical worker, one should have good moral character and medical ethics, as well as understand the patient's pain. When changing dressings, she would first soak the bandage, then peel it off slowly with tweezers. She would comfort the patient as she worked and sometimes played music similar to the sounds of nature to soothe the patient. The patients called her "Falun Gong Doctor" because she had an affable manner and always thought of their plight.
After beginning to practise Falun Gong, Ms. Lu lived according to the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance. She would help whoever had difficulties or obstacles. When out-of-town workers were unable to pay for treatment, Ms. Lu would tell them to think about payment after they had healed. Normally, burn treatment in a hospital can cost twenty to thirty thousand yuan1 and scars often remain. Ms. Lu charged one to two thousand yuan and there would be no scars. Some patients could not pay the one to two thousand yuan, so she treated them for free. When her patients thanked her repeatedly, she told them that Falun Gong had changed her and she would not have been so kind if she didn't practise Falun Gong.
This good person was detained numerous times for practising Falun Gong. On August 8th, Ms. Lu was arrested again. Her family still does not know her whereabouts and they are very worried. Referral patients arrive at the clinic every day to seek treatment, and many out-of-town patients arrive with high hopes. When they learn of Ms. Lu's situation, they leave disappointed and severely denounce the goon-like actions of the police.
