55-Year-Old Mr. Cheng Yuanlong Dies as a Result of Torture at Benxi City Prison

Mr. Cheng Yuanlong, 55, lived in Fushun City, Liaoning Province. In 2000, he learned about Falun Gong and began cultivating. He wished to tell people about the goodness of Falun Gong, so he went out to distribute leaflets exposing the persecution of Falun Gong in October 2001. He was subsequently arrested, and the police detained him in November 2001. During his detention, guards stomped on his ribs, causing internal injuries that needed more than six months to heal.

Mr. Cheng was later sent to the Wujiapu Forced Labour Camp located in Fushun City, where he was subjected to the Strict Management Ward, brainwashing sessions, and solitary confinement multiple times. On April 16th, 2002, Warden Wu Wei and Chinese Communist Party (CCP) Secretary Liu Zhigang ordered prisoners to brutally beat Mr. Cheng and lock him up in a small cell, where his hands were cuffed and he was hung from the metal door frame for a week. Fellow practitioners who were also detained there went on a hunger strike to protest the torture, and the guards released him.

Mr. Cheng protested the persecution by refusing to wear the prison uniform, recite the prison rules, or join the group "military training." Warden Wu Aidong, guard Ren Fuming, and local police officers fabricated files, collected false evidence from prisoners, and formally arrested Mr. Cheng in the camp, which means that he will most likely be tried and sentenced to prison. Mr. Cheng asked the officer who read the arrest warrant to him in the labour camp, "What crime have I committed?" The officer left without another word, and other officers took Mr. Cheng away.

In November 2001, Mr. Cheng was sentenced to six years in prison. Several years of abuse suffered in Xihu Prison of Benxi City caused Mr. Cheng to become emaciated, but he never give up his faith. His family requested to bail him out on medical parole when he could no longer stand up, but the prison administration still refused to let him out.

On August 20th, 2007, Prison Administration officials suddenly carried Mr. Cheng home without notification, evidently afraid that he was dying. They left him to his family. Due to the severity of his condition, he could not eat normally or recover. Mr. Cheng died on March 7th, 2008.
