Massive Arrests in Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province

On April 15th, 2008, personnel with the 610 Office¹ of Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province, started arresting Falun Gong practitioners. Practitioner Ms. Li Wei was on a business trip and thus avoided arrest. However, her husband, Yang Haidong, was arrested. After they had arrested all the practitioners in the area, the authorities continued to look for Ms. Li. Officials from her workplace visited her parents and her in-laws repeatedly, claiming they would guarantee her safety and a normal working environment [if she would return].

After receiving the information, Ms. Li believed that her company officials were sincere, so she returned to work at about 8:00 a.m. on July 21st. Two 610 Office agents then took her away and admitted her to the Sanshui Brainwashing Centre. Her company had helped the 610 Office set up a trap for her. The 610 Office of Guangzhou City and police stations in the Tianhe District were jointly responsible for this massive arrest incident.
