Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Zhang Jiaoyu of Chenxi County, Hunan Province is a housewife, about 56 years old. She had many illnesses before practising Falun Gong. Her heart problems were the most serious. She couldn't take care of herself and was often hospitalized. The hospital told her that she had only three more years to live. Ms. Zhang started practising Falun Gong in 1996. Her mind and body thoroughly transformed and she became very healthy. She told others of her experience and how good Falun Gong is. Ms Zhang lived her life according to the principles of Falun Gong, Truth-Compassion-Forbearance.

After the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) began persecuting Falun Gong in July 1999, Ms. Zhang Jiaoyu went to Beijing many times to appeal for justice for Falun Gong but was detained by the CCP. The longest detention was over a month, and approximately 2,000 yuan1 was extorted from her. Again in February 2002 she was arrested. She was taken to the Baimalong Women's Labour Camp in Zhuzhou City for one year. During her time there, she was constantly threatened and abused by the guards. Her heart problems returned and she never fully recovered after her release.

On July 6th, 2008, three practitioners, Ms. Zhang Jiaoyu, Ms. Tang Yuhua, and Ms. Huang Aiyu were distributing leaflets exposing the persecution of Falun Gong in the county capital when they were arrested by police and held in a detention centre. Ms. Zhang suffered a heart attack in the detention centre and was taken to the nearby Bo'ai Hospital. She was in critical condition and received emergency treatment. Afterwards, Ms. Zhang was transferred to the county Traditional Medicine Hospital upon her family's request. The police didn't want to take responsibility for her condition; they told her family to handle everything and left without paying any of her medical costs. She stayed a few days and afterwards, Ms. Zhang's family brought her home to recuperate. However, the county 610 Office2 did not stop the persecution against Ms. Zhang and her family.

The county 610 Office ordered Ms. Zhang's husband's work unit, the County Education Department, to pay 4000 yuan. Her husband, Mr. Gong, was an odd-job worker at the Chenxi County Education Department. He had been retired for many years and only received about 300 yuan in living expenses per month. The education department deducted the 4,000 yuan from his wages, which equalled his earnings for an entire year.

Ms. Zhang Jiaoyu's son worked as a driver at the county public transit company. The county 610 Office reported that someone had informed them that he had hung a charm amulet with "Falun Gong" written on it in his bus. On July 16th, 2008, several people from the 610 Office accompanied by staff from the Chenyang Town public order office, the chief of Zhangjia'ao Police Station, Yu Qingchang and others showed up on the bus driven by her son. They saw the Falun Gong amulet, took a photo of it and removed it. They took her son to the Chenyang Town government Office, and later took him to the Domestic Security Division.

At the Domestic Security Division, the CCP staff threatened Ms. Zhang's son, forced him to pay a 5,000-yuan fine as well as write a guarantee letter (not to practice Falun Gong) before releasing him. At the time, Ms. Zhang's husband was working temporarily at the public transit as a ticket seller. He was informed by the company of what had happened to his son when he was about to collect his wages. The company had taken the 610 Office agent out for a meal that cost 680 yuan. This money was deducted from his pay. Ms. Zhang's husband couldn't withstand the continuing incidents of persecution and divorced her. Her son was put on leave for 2 months by the county public transit company and was forced to get another job elsewhere. During that month, Ms. Zhang's whole family had almost no income because of the persecution. They even had to borrow money to come up with all the money that was extorted.

Ms. Zhang Jiaoyu is still being harassed. The deputy chief of the Zhangjiao'ao Police Station, Liao Boqiang, has been to her house three times to harass her.

Note

1. "Yuan" is the Chinese currency; 500 yuan is equal to the average monthly income of an urban worker in China.

2. "The 610 office" is an agency specifically created to persecute Falun Gong, with absolute power over each level of administration in the Party and all other political and judiciary systems.
