Bo Xilai Implements Red Terror in Chongqing City

In late 2008, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in Chongqing City brutally persecuted local Falun Gong practitioners under the guise of "safeguarding the image and dignity of the CCP." Initiated and led by Wang Lijun, deputy director of the Chongqing City Police Station, a special group was formed from the Municipal Police Department Command Centre, Criminal Investigation Team, National Security Team and seven other units. In several days, over 105 policemen investigated as many as 873 people. The police searched everywhere for their suspects, and over fifty people were arrested and taken to Tongjiaqiao Police Substation in the Shapingba District. Everyone was in danger, and the whole city was shrouded in red terror.

From the very beginning, the police targeted Falun Gong practitioners. It was known that the fifty people arrested at Tongjiaqiao Police Substation were all practitioners. During the interrogations, the police brutally beat and relentlessly tortured them. Falun Gong practitioner Mr. Zhang Jingzhi was so severely injured that he was sent to a hospital for treatment. Family members strongly requested the release of their loved ones and condemned the persecution, and as a result, most of them were eventually released. However, Mr. Zhang Jingzhi and Ms. Wen Tingyu are still being detained. Recently, in order to investigate letters sent by Falun Gong practitioners speaking out for justice for Falun Gong, a lot of police officers were dispatched to harass practitioners at their homes and to get samples of their handwriting by any means possible.

Bo Xilai is the behind-the-scenes person who is notorious for having brutally persecuted Falun Gong, and he is a core member of the Jiang Zemin [former leader of China and instigator of the persecution] regime. Earlier, while in charge of Liaoning Province, he committed countless crimes, including persecuting over 200 practitioners to death, causing countless practitioners to be seriously injured and disabled, or causing their families to be torn apart. Under his direct orders, Masanjia Forced Labour Camp gained a reputation for its brutality and inhuman treatment of practitioners. He was ultimately responsible for eighteen female Falun Gong practitioners being stripped and forcibly put into the male cells. After each of his visits, several practitioners were brutally tortured to the point of being disabled, mental collapse, or death.

In November 2007, Bo Xilai was given the job of the Secretary of the CCP in Chongqing City. He continued to brutally persecute Falun Gong there. He gave orders to have a great many practitioners arrested and detained in prison, and once there they were tortured. Just before the Olympic Games last year, there were over 100 Falun Gong practitioners suffering in prison. In order to "transform" [forcibly renounce Falun Gong] practitioners, they used all kinds of torture and brutal beatings. Over the period of just one year in Chongqing, many practitioners were tortured to death or became physically or mentally disabled.

The following two examples show the severity of the persecution. First is Jiang Xiqing, a practitioner from Jiangjin District. He was put into a freezer after being brutally beaten while imprisoned at Xishanping Forced Labour Camp in Chongqing. When his family was informed and came to collect his body, they found that his body was still warm even after being in the freezer for six hours. They strongly requested emergency rescue. Over twenty guards were there, but instead of trying to help, they forced the family to leave and pushed the body back into the freezer, denying any last chance of rescue. The second example was practitioner Mr. Kang Hong from Jiangbei District, who suffered severely from beatings in Xishanping Forced Labour Camp. His shins were fractured, but instead of the guards taking him to the hospital or releasing him on medical bail, they continued persecuting him. He suffered a mental collapse, and his body and clothes were covered in faeces.

In both cases the practitioners were good people, one was retired in his sixties, the other a doctor in his forties. However, because they practised Falun Gong and followed the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance and refused to be "transformed," one of them is dead and the other has been tortured and disabled.

We urgently call for help to stop the persecution against Falun Gong practitioners, and request the immediate release of Mr. Zhang Jingzhi, Ms. Wen Tingyu and all detained practitioners.
