Mr. Yang Xiuming, a Falun Gong Practitioner from Hunan Province, Detained in Prison in Guizhou Province for Five Years

Mr. Yang Xiuming, a Falun Gong practitioner and officer in the Xinhuang County Civil Affairs Bureau, was reported to the police for distributing information about Falun Gong. He was arrested by the Political and Security Division of the Xinhuang Police Department in Huaihua City, Hunan Province, in collaboration with the National Security Team in Yuping County, Tongren City, Guizhou Province.

Mr. Yang is currently being held in the Yuping County Detention Centre in Guizhou Province. He has been sentenced to a term of seven years imprisonment. Prior to his sentencing, he had been detained and persecuted in Dujun City Prison in Guizhou Province, where he was not allowed any visits by his family members, including his eighty-year-old mother who came all the way from her hometown in Hunan Province to Guizhou Province.

On August 4th, 2003, Yang Xiuming was forcibly arrested from his workplace at the Xinhuang County Civilian Administration Bureau by Li Dongping, a Captain of the Yuping County National Security Brigade in Tongren City, Guizhou Province, one of his subordinates Ruan Jianping, Head of the Public Security Department, Captain Yao Benxin of the Xinhuang County National Security Brigade, Li Xinming of the 610 Office1, Yao Jianlin. After Mr. Yang's arrest, no one was notified of his whereabouts. Later on, some friends heard from an insider that he was detained at the Yuping County Detention Centre of Guizhou Province.

During the detention, they interrogated and tortured practitioner Yang. Led by Li Dongping and Ruan Jianping, three or four policemen forcefully held Mr. Yang down on the ground on his knees, and his hands were cuffed behind his back. He was forced to stand facing a wall and beaten. He was not allowed to drink water or sleep for two consecutive days and nights.

In September 2003, Yang Xiuming was arrested by the court of Yuping County, and to protest the persecution, he went on a hunger strike. Over the next twenty days, practitioner Yang was brutally force-fed by Director Wang and Deputy Director Shu Hongjun of the detention center at Yuping County. He was whipped and 38-kilogram shackles were chained on him for ten days. After being force-fed, he spat up blood twice, and the torture left him incontinent and emaciated.

On October 28th, 2004, the Court of Yuping County in Guizhou Province, the National Security Department, and the 610 Office at Xinhuang County of Hunan Province sentenced Yang Xiuming to seven years of imprisonment. On November 18th, 2004 Yang Xiuming was sent to Duyun Prison of Guizhou Province for further persecution.

Mr. Yang Xiuming is still detained, and his family members are not allowed to have any visits. His eighty-year-old mother came from Hunan Province to visit him and was turned away.
