In 2002, Mr. Feng Derong from Hunan Province worked in the Pingzhou Shoe Factory in Guangdong Province. One night, he was spotted by police as he practised the Falun Gong exercises outdoors. The police sent him back to his home town where he was detained in the Dongan County Detention Centre in Yongzhou, Hunan Province. One month later, his parents were forced to pay 2,500 yuan1 for his release.
When the Dongan government held a so-called "study class" in Zixi to brainwash Falun Gong practitioners, they sent Mr. Feng to the brainwashing class. Around midnight Mr. Feng managed to walk away. The police searched everywhere and went to the homes of his all relatives, but they did not find him. They surmised Mr. Feng might go to Yongzhou and so dispatched a vehicle to chase him down. However, on their way, a car accident blocked the road and the police vehicle could not get through.
On another occasion as Mr. Feng was delivering Falun Gong articles to practitioners in Huangnidong, Dongan County, he was arrested again and detained for one month. The police extorted 3,000 yuan from his family. The family didn't have the money to pay the extortion, so they put down 1,000 yuan in cash and signed an IOU for 2,000 yuan.
After his release, Mr. Feng continued to tell people about how wonderful Falun Gong is. One day, he was reported while posting a banner that read, "Falun Gong is good." The police rushed into his home to search it. But they left in anger because they did not find any evidence to use against him.
Soon after, the police broke into Mr. Feng's home a second time and found some Falun Gong materials. They sent Mr. Feng to Xinkaipu Forced Labour Camp for a one-year term. About a dozen collaborators2 beat Mr. Feng because he would not write the three statements3 . One person named Yan Guojian slapped Mr. Feng's face in front of another Falun Gong practitioner, saying "Instructor Zhou gives me the permission to hit you!"
Mr. Feng eventually became mentally unstable due to the abuse he suffered in the labour camp. But the camp not only denied treatment, but also did not inform his family. Instead, they tied him to a bed for over ten days.
On November 20th, 2003, the camp ordered his family to come pick up Mr. Feng. On November 21st, when his parents went to Changsha to pick him up, they saw that he was severely mentally disoriented. The next morning, his parents gave him money to buy breakfast. When he walked outside, he kept falling and walked around aimlessly. Medical treatment has had no effect on him.
On September 6th, 2004, Mr. Feng went missing. To date, his whereabouts are unknown.
Note
1. "Yuan" is the Chinese currency; 500 yuan is equal to the average monthly income of an urban worker in China.
2. "Collaborators": former practitioners who have turned against Falun Gong under brainwashing and torture. They are then made to assist in brainwashing and torturing practitioners.
3. "Three Statements": Practitioners are coerced under brainwashing and torture to write "Repentance Statement," "Guarantee Statement" or 'Dissociation Statement" as proof that they have given up their belief. In the statement, the practitioner is forced to admit remorse for practising Falun Gong, promise to give up Falun Gong, and never again associate with other practitioners or go to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong.
