At 10:00 a.m. on September 10th, 2009, the Linghai City Court of Liaoning Province tried practitioner Jin Bowen. Mr. Jin's family had hired two lawyers to defend him.
On the day of the trial, there was not a single empty seat in the courtroom. In attendance were Mr. Jin's family, his work unit superiors, his co-workers, his lawyers, the judge, and other legal professionals. It was said that the legal professionals were there to hear how the lawyers defended a Falun Gong practitioner.
The court was on high alert at the time of the trial. The gate was closed and attendees were strictly scrutinized and their movements restricted. In the court, the Linghai City procuratorate claimed that Mr. Jin "utilized a cult organization to sabotage law enforcement." The two defence lawyers spoke firmly in favour of Mr. Jin's innocence. Many times the presiding judge and assistants did not have a reply and simply pounded on the table in great anger.
The government officials presiding over the trial included presiding judge Wang Xin, assistant judge Li Daming, two procuratorators from the Linghai City Procuratorate, and the head procuratorator, Li Feng.
Mr. Jin was arrested at work on the morning of July 20th, 2009. Six plain clothes policemen in two police vehicles went to the Linghai City Statistics Bureau. As Mr. Jin was off work that day and at home, Li Dan from his workplace telephoned him and convinced him to come to work, where the police arrested him and took him to the Linghai City Police Department's national security team.
At noon the next day, without any warrant or proper legal paper work, officers from the Linghai City Police Department's national security team broke into Mr. Jin's home, ransacked it, and confiscated his personal computers, inkjet printers, Falun Gong books, and a large amount of personal items. During the break in, Mr. Jin and his family members were not present. The list of confiscated items was signed by Li Dan from Mr. Jin's workplace.
Mr. Jin was detained at the Linghai City Detention Centre. Liu Haiwang from the Linghai City Police Department's national security team submitted Mr. Jin's case to the Linghai City Court.
