Ms. Tang Wenyan and Ms. Tang Wenjuan, Sisters from Hebei Province, Suffer Persecution

Sisters Ms. Tang Wenyan and Ms. Tang Wenjuan are Falun Gong practitioners from Pingshan County in Hebei Province. They were arrested about five years ago for telling people about the persecution of Falun Gong. They have suffered forced brainwashing and were subjected to forced labour. Their family members were also implicated and persecuted.

Ms. Tang Wenyan, 49, is an official in Pingshan County Education Bureau. Her younger sister Tang Wenjuan, 42, is the owner of a beauty shop. Both of them experienced better health from practising Falun Gong.

On May 1st, 2004, when the two sisters distributed Falun Gong information near Nange Village and Beige Village (in Xibaipe Township), the head of Nange Village Party Branch Wang Guiping reported them to the police. More than ten policemen from Xibaipe Police Station, including Su Shihua, surrounded and arrested them.

The police also arrested their brother, Tang Wenjie (a non-practitioner from Tangjiagou Village) who had come to pick them up. At that time, police officer Su Shihua demanded that Mr. Tang Wenjie curse Falun Gong and its founder (a method often used to find out if a person practises Falun Gong or to incite hatred for Falun Gong). Ms. Tang Wenyuan responded, "Why do you force people to curse? Haven't we all been taught in school not to curse and not to fight?" The three of them were then sent to Xibaipe Police Station and spent the night handcuffed to a bench.

The next day, May 2nd, police officer Su Shihua escorted them to Pingshan County Police Department. Feng Qingfang, the head of the Political and Security Division, conducted body searches on them. He took more than 100 yuan¹ from Tang Wenjuan and put it into his own pocket. He also took away her new handbag that was worth 300 yuan.

Ms. Tang Wenjuan was sent to the detention centre on the evening of May 2nd, 2004. She was later ordered to serve two years of forced labour and sent to Shijiazhuang Forced Labour Camp on June 2nd, 2004. She was released on June 2nd, 2006. Because of her absence, her beauty shop had to be closed, which caused huge financial losses. For more than two years, Tang Wenjuan's husband, Guan Jiancun (a non-practitioner), had to take care of their two young children (a five-year-old and an 11-year-old) and his father (who is in his 70s and unable to take care of himself). Since he couldn't leave home to work, the whole family had to live on their savings.

Ms. Tang Wenyan was sent to the brainwashing centre at Wentang Town operated by Pingshan County 610 Office (an organisation of special agents just for persecuting Falun Gong) on May 2nd, 2004. She was detained at the brainwashing centre for two months and was forced to listen to Chinese Communist Party propaganda. During her detention, her husband (Que Xinping, also a non-practitioner) had to take care of their 8-year-old son alone, cooking, washing clothes, and taking him to and from school. He also kept visiting the police department and 610 Office to get his wife released. During this period, Feng Qingfang extorted 6000 yuan from Que Xinping without giving him a receipt for the money. Wang Genting, the head of the 610 Office, also extorted 5000 yuan from Que Xinping.

Mr. Tang Wenjie, their brother, was taken to Pingshan County Police Department on May 2nd, 2004. Police officer Xiao Suilong from the Political Security Division demanded that Tang Wenjie curse Falun Gong and its founder. Ms. Tang Wenyuan immediately advised her brother not to do so. Tang Wenjie was detained for two days for refusing to do so. Chen Wenjin, the head of Xibaipe Police Station, extorted 100 yuan from him without giving a receipt for the money, as well as a carton of cigarettes. Mr. Tang Wenjie's tricycle, that he uses for his transportation business, was held at the police station for over a month, which caused him to lose about 3,000 yuan in income. Guan Tuiping, the head of Tangjiagou Village party committee, forced him to do one month of public service at Xiagui Police Station.
