Viciousness at the Qingpu Brainwashing Centre in Shanghai

Although its name suggests that it is a school, the Qingpu Law Education Centre is in fact a specially designated prison. Despite its beautiful surroundings, it is filled with vicious persecution.

Falun Gong practitioners from all districts in Shanghai have been arrested and then detained there. Each practitioner is assigned to two inmates who monitor the practitioner 24 hours a day. Practitioners are not allowed to study the Falun Gong teachings or do the Falun Gong exercises. Instead, they are forced to watch videos defaming Falun Gong and write out their understandings afterwards. The policy posted on the wall states that so-called "study" finishes at 5:00 or 6:00 p.m. But in fact, this can be changed at will, and sometimes practitioners are still being subjected to brainwashing tactics by inmates even at midnight. A large portion of the brainwashing is watching videos that slander Falun Gong--either the CCTV series or speeches given by so-called "experts." Practitioners are then forced to write a guarantee statement giving up their practice.

To further deceive people, the brainwashing centre seems to provide well-prepared meals, and it supplies hot water for people to take a shower. Each room, about 10 square metres (or 110 sq. ft.), has three beds. Security is tight and the facility is surrounded with iron fences to prevent escape. There are guards on duty inside the building in the hallways and each room is locked at about 10:00 p.m. every day.

The officials at the brainwashing sessions sometimes tell practitioners' family members to pressure them to give up their practice. In addition, they play with words and distort Falun Gong's teachings to confuse people. These are common strategies exploited to defame Falun Gong and "transform" [forcibly renounce Falun Gong] practitioners. To force practitioners to give up their belief, officials threaten them with term extensions, labour camp detention, and imprisonment.

Inmates are replaced many times to monitor practitioners and defame Falun Gong, as instigated by the Communist regime officials. Among them are several extremely vicious ones, such as Dong Naiqian (male) and Jiang Qiqiong (female). Both of them are members of the Shanghai Anti-Cult Association. Dong often stays at the brainwashing centre, and he once said, "I am evil." He gave speeches that specifically defamed Falun Gong and shared his experiences in "transforming" practitioners.

Jiang was a former head at the Shanghai Women's Forced Labour Camp. She once organised collaborators, former practitioners who have turned against Falun Gong under brainwashing and torture and are then made to assist in brainwashing and torturing practitioners, to spread their distorted theories in an attempt to confuse practitioners and "transform" them. She was also involved in producing a drama (Yi Xin as playwright) that defamed Falun Gong. Because of her persecuting Falun Gong, Jiang was later promoted to work in the Shanghai 610 Office (an organisation of special agents just for persecuting Falun Gong), where she further persecuted practitioners using psychological means. Now she has come to the brainwashing centre to "transform" practitioners.
