For the past ten years, Ms. Ma Haiyan and her parents have been frequently persecuted for their belief. In 2009, Ms. Ma left home to avoid further persecution.
The following is an account of the persecution she endured.
After July 20th, 1999, I went with my parents to Beijing to appeal to higher authorities for the right to practise Falun Gong. However, police officers detained us in Tongxian Detention Centre for over ten days and tortured us. We were beaten and forced to squat down with our legs apart, bend our heads down with our arms up against a wall, or stand for a long period of time. Furthermore, we were fed food that had sand and insects in it, and forced to take showers in an open area while the guards hit our backs with wet towels. My father was also beaten by several people.
After we were taken back to Changchun, they immediately sent us to Balibao Detention Centre. However, the detention centre was overcrowded and I was taken to a "guest" house on Guangfu Road before they allowed us to go home.
On October 17th, 1999, we were arrested by officers from the Yangjia Weizi (now Changxinjie) Police Station. My parents were sent to Tiebei Detention Centre in Changchun City. I was interrogated for seven days before they sent me to Daguang Detention Centre. I was detained there for more than 30 days, while my father and mother were detained for 45 and 65 days, respectively. My brother had to pay more than 3,000 yuan1 before I was released. After my parents returned home, they both suffered from scabies.
On February 9th, 2000, I went with two practitioners (one of them, Zhang Zhiqiu, has died as a result of the persecution) to Beijing to appeal on behalf of Falun Gong again. On February 10th, while we were at the appeals office, we were arrested and taken back to Changchun. We were sent to Daguang Detention Centre. Fifteen days later, I was transferred to Heizuizi Forced Labour Camp. At that time, my mother was detained in the same labour camp only because she did the Falun Gong exercises at the park.
At the forced labour camp, no one was allowed to do the Falun Gong exercises. If we did, we would be severely beaten. I lived in fear because I constantly heard practitioners screaming as they were beaten with electric batons. In September, two Chinese Communist Party (CCP) guards, Feng Xiaochun and Li Tong, used electric batons to beat me, Li Shuying and two other practitioners. For a whole year I lived in hell.
In early 2001, my mother and I were released from the labour camp. My mother's blood pressure was over 200 mmHg. At home, police officers constantly monitored us and forced us to sign guarantee statements to renounce practising Falun Gong.
In March 2002, while my mother was visiting practitioner Zhang Xiuge, officers from Xingyejie Police Station arrested them and sent them to Daguang Detention Centre. My mother went on a hunger strike for 15 consecutive days. After we paid a fee of 8,000 yuan, they released my mother.
In September 2006, three offices from Yangjia Weizi Police Station searched my home. They left when they couldn't find anything.
In March 2008, three officers, Sui Yuping, Zheng Weishi and a security officer from Yangjia Weizi Police Station, came to my house to search it again. They also asked for the guarantee statements.
In 2009, CCP officials established a brainwashing centre in my city. To avoid further persecution, I decided to leave home.
