Mr. Sun Zhen graduated from China University of Political Science and Law in Beijing in 1999. Upon graduation, he went to work for the Beijing Armed Police Central Unit. Because he persisted in practising Falun Gong, Mr. Sun lost his job and was forced into homelessness. While enduring eight years of imprisonment at Gongzhuling Prison, Mr. Sun was tortured and suffered a great deal.

Mr. Sun was sentenced to an eight-year prison term, which ended on May 1st, 2010. Gongzhuling Prison officials have refused to release him and added three months to his term. Mr. Sun is suffering from tuberculosis and severe malnutrition, and his mental acuity has deteriorated.

In November 1999, Mr. Sun went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong and was arrested. He was sent back to Dehui City, and was detained at the Dehui City Detention Centre for fifteen days. On July 20th, 2000, he went to Beijing to appeal again and was arrested for refusing to provide his name and address, at which time he was detained for over twenty days. The police obtained his home address from his former school, he was sent back to Dehui City on October 10th. He was detained for seven days, and was released only after the detention centre extorted 1,500 yuan¹ as a "repatriation fee." Those who saw him at that time described him as being emaciated.

In July 2002, Mr. Sun was arrested at Beijing's Changping Town by officers from the Huairou Town Police Department's Domestic Security Section. He was first detained at the local detention centre, then transferred to the Beijing City Law Education Centre for brainwashing. He was then wrongfully sentenced to eight years in prison. All of this was kept hidden from his family when they repeatedly inquired about him.

Mr. Sun and another Falun Gong practitioner were sent from Yanji Korean Prefecture to Jilin Province. They were jailed at Gongzhuling Prison, in Group No. 5. Mr. Sun spent time in closely monitored small cells, and suffered the cruel "dead man's bed" torture. In this torture, a wooden board is elevated up to two feet off the ground. Prison guards instruct two criminals to handcuff the victim's hands and feet to opposite ends of the board, with the person laying on it with arms extended over the head and legs opened in a V-shaped pattern. Except for meal time (three times a day, for ten minutes), the victim is tightly fastened to the board for the entire day. After a day of this torture, the victim is rendered unable to even turn his body, much less walk, due to numbness in the limbs.
