Zhang Chongyue in Critical Condition in Prison

Falun Gong practitioner Mr. Zhang Chongyue, from Xingcheng City, Liaoning Province, was sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment. He is currently jailed at Section 6 of the Panjin Prison in Liaoning Province. Mr. Zhang's health has been declining since he was sent to the prison. When Mrs. Zhang was visiting her husband on June 12th, 2010, she saw that he was extremely weak and thin. He was unable to walk steadily. With high blood pressure he felt dizzy constantly. Mrs. Zhang asked for Mr. Zhang to be hospitalised, but the prison authorities said that they could allow that only if Mr. Zhang acknowledged criminal wrongdoing.

Mr. Zhang Chongyue, 39 years old, is from Guojia Village, Dazhai Township, Xingcheng, Huludao City. He has been practising Falun Gong and following the teachings of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance, and is well regarded within the community.

On the morning February 25th, 2008, while Mr. Zhang was still in bed in the house that he had rented in Suizhong County, Huludao City, policemen from the Suizhong State Security Group broke in and arrested him. The policemen included group leader Li Changhua and Liu Zhong. They took away Mr. Zhang's personal belongings, including a computer and a printer. Three days later, policemen broke into Mr. Zhang's home again and took away more of his property, including a motorcycle and supplies that were used to produce materials exposing the persecution of Falun Gong.

No one was notified of Mr. Zhang's whereabouts after he was arrested. His family members learned from other channels that he was being detained at the Suizhong Detention Centre. Later, the Suizhong Court held a secret trial for Mr. Zhang and sentenced him to 10 years of imprisonment. He was first sent to Jinzhou Prison, and three months later to Panjin Prison.

Mr. Zhang's health has been declining since he was sent to prison, and his blood pressure reached 230. Upon learning that her son was at the brink of death, Mr. Zhang's 73-year-old mother went to the prison with Mrs. Zhang, in an effort to see him. However, the wardens refused to allow a meeting with the excuse that the two women did not have the identification cards required by the prison. In addition, the wardens denied that Mr. Zhang had high blood pressure. The wardens also asserted that Mrs. Zhang's last meeting with her husband was not in line with the prison's regulations, and they prohibited her from visiting her husband anymore. It is worth pointing out that Mr. Zhang had suffered from a severe case of high blood pressure before learning Falun Gong, and he recovered from the illness after practising Falun Gong.
