Prior to practising Falun Gong, Ms. Li had severe tuberculosis. She was only 23 years old and had an infant at the time. Her family was so poor that she was taken to the hospital only after she started to have a very high fever and became delusional at night.
After that, every spring and autumn, Ms. Li had to go to the clinic for intravenous antibiotics. She was also often sick generally. She was very thin and was unable to work in the fields. They were so poor that more than once, Ms. Li had to ask her mother for rice to eat. Tortured by her illness, Ms. Li would lose her temper often and would curse at people and throw things on the ground. She also gambled.
